Overcaffeinated. Patriotic - as in I want the UK to be the best version of itself. Tbh I mostly use this website as a brain dump. Half the time I don't even know what I'm on about. Green technology fan. Be kind to trans people.

Hey, anyone who's out there, I'd like you to think about one thing… Big changes are possible. We can fix things. We can make things better. Hard problems, wicked problems even, can be resolved, if we have sufficient resolve. Don't dismiss the difficult as impossible.

Imagine having that quote attributed to you. How could you live with yourself?

flyingrodent@flyingrodent.bsky.social

Yeah, bad news folks: you know how everything in Britain has been increasingly generous, functional, rational, pleasant and generally awesome for the last twenty years or so? Well I’m afraid the party is over for you greedy pigs: it’s time for you to suck up some real pain. Thanks

The important thing is to avoid spooking the electorate with meaningful change.

Saul Staniforth@saulstaniforth.bsky.social

Jon Kay to Jonathan Reynolds: "You're planning to remove import taxes from products like chocolate, gherkins, marmalade. Your own figures say that will save the average household 40p a week. At a time when [bills] are going up, do you really think people are going to notice 40p a week?"

Given the opportunity, we should loudly applaud Reform imperial measurement bollocks in the hope that they propose things so absurd that even the dimmest might realise that they're being taken for a ride.

Is there some way of saying to Brexit voters "aren't you insulted by how stupid they think you are?"

Dr Craig Dalȝell@thecommongreen.scot

There's a very simple reason that this won't happen. A party founded on "cutting costs" and "common sense politics" has just told the entire logistics sector that it wants to needlessly increase their shipping costs. www.thenational.scot/news/2666878...

I've cancelled my DD to @amnestyuk.bsky.social after many years. I messaged them twice via their online form regarding their about turn on anti-trans rights organisations and received no reply. While they remain supportive of LGBTQI+ rights, they seem to have gone quiet on the activism.

The BBC’s constant tendency to play down or ignore the true nature of the far right is a major contributor to its growth

Sunder Katwala (sundersays)@sundersays.bsky.social

BBC report sanitises the overt racism: It notes that organisers warned marchers not to talk to journalists, then gives the "anti-immigration group"'s own sanitised description of itself. It does not report they chanted "England for the white man" in the streets. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

I guess it's good to hear a Labour MP arguing against their own party's line on immigration, but it doesn't look to be changing any time soon.

Stella Creasy MP@stellacreasy.bsky.social

It’s terrifying how easily the premise whatever the issue the problem is immigrants and ergo to fix it we must make all immigrants lives harder has become normalised. Here it is being used not only to define the riots in France but then to justify penalising those on visas here in the uk. 1/4”

Seems that there are consequences to cowardly, ill-conceived polices. Who knew!

Tristan Grayford@tristangrayford.scot

And simply no one is shocked to discover that the invasive yet stupid plan to try and control kids whilst allowing the rampant predatory behaviour of big tech to continue unregulated has failed. No one paying attention failed to expect exactly this. www.theguardian.com/society/2026...

The shadow culture secretary wants to stop funding culture. Who exactly are the Tories trying to appeal to these days??

flyingrodent@flyingrodent.bsky.social

I am feeling the Keminaissance. Behold: mainstream British politics.

Dawkins' Christmas lecture with the evolving creatures simulation was so cool. It was nice to have an atheist out there saying that, on a personal level, you can just dismiss religion as nonsense and get on with your life, too. But maybe he was always an arsehole, looking back.

It really sounded like bollocks… did it turn out to be bollocks?

The Spectre Haunting Europe@frightfulhobgoblin.bsky.social

Soooo this extremely poorly-defined PFI-for-power-plants scheme has, in fact, turned out to be a largely ineffectual placebo to avoid actual state intervention in the energy market? And has been viewed by the Treasury as as a lump of dead money to be assigned elsewhere? I'm shocked, I tell you.

Depressing to hear the BBC propagating the non-story started by the Tories about the possibility of power cuts because of renewables A classic fossil fuel lie being given credibility by our public service broadcaster #BBCR4Today

This whole "facts" business is all very well, but this is in comparison to the *actual* past. What if we make the comparison to an imaginary past where we're all smartly-dressed Victorians, striding around an immaculate London with no crime or poverty?

Tim Bale@timbale.bsky.social

Some good news (from the National Crime Survey, h/t frasernelson.substack.com/p/lawless-br...)

I feel like we need terminology that succinctly explains basically how well a country is doing? Based maybe upon the typical quality of life rather and resilience than the GDP or supposed technological sophistication.

Prof Nisreen Alwan@nisreenalwan.bsky.social

Stop using terms like ‘developed’ and ‘developing’ or even worse ‘third world’ countries. Use ‘high income’ or ‘low/middle income’ because yeah it’s not about any inherent ability to develop, it’s more about income and the stability and domination (sometimes over other countries) it needs to grow!

Is Britain the most Just In Time country on earth? Why do we hate the idea of stockpiles so much? Are we hopelessly accountant-brained?

George Monbiot@georgemonbiot.bsky.social

Sure, we should, if we can (many cannot). But as I keep pointing out, the government itself is making no provision at all. No stockpiles, no back-up, no alternative sources. It's individuating the response to a collective problem, and that never ends well. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

Horrifying stuff. Do people not realise that they're making room for something much more significant than cutting immigration?

Jonathan Portes@jdportes.bsky.social

Enoch Powell level bile and lies from the Times www.thetimes.com/comment/the-...

There's no way the system was going to let all that Boomer wealth trickle down with the usual suspects taking their cut.

I'm no expert, but this seems like a better response to anyone who thinks obsessing about trans people is in any way going to make women and girls safer.

Erin Reed@erininthemorning.com

Democratic-aligned group Progress Action Fund has released a PRO-trans ad, attacking Republicans for being creepy in bathrooms. It will run in Texas and Ohio, and is expected to reach millions. You have to see the ad itself. Subscribe to support our journalism.

This is horrifying. Now it's government policy to give racists a little pat on the head and to tell them that they're right to be worried about foreigners, this sort of things is sadly unsurprising. Bullying anyone who might be on the 🌈 spectrum is also now encouraged. Terrible regression.

Hugo Gordon@hugogordon.bsky.social

This is fucked. Really bleak how entrenched this is becoming.

Just received a couple of copies of Reform's new newspaper through my letterbox 😬 Having millions to spend is going to ensure them a level of visibility the other parties will struggle to match.

Interesting to see the legal mess I've long anticipated due to LLMs now playing out. My big concern is that sufficiently wealthy / motivated individuals might be able to use "AI" to defend themselves against accusations of serious crimes based upon impenetrable webs of case law.

Scuzzy Mortspider 🕷️ 🎃@jussienorthside.bsky.social

Keir Starmer said he wanted to “mainline AI into the veins” of the UK. Well, we did as he wanted and, like much of what he said, he didn’t have a clue what he was talking about. Now we’re further up shit creek as a result. Another blinder by Sir Keith.

Tbh I don't know if this is realistic, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if the system wasn't ready for intricate 10,000 page documents that allow people to literally get away with murder, primarily because it would take years of work to pick apart the detail.

The "marketplace of ideas" does in fact seem to operate like a marketplace - a handful of rich guys own everything and decide what goes on based upon their preferences and prejudices.

I don't know how we get across to people that Reform is a party for people who hate Britain. They're a turbocharged version of the old Tories, in love with a completely imaginary past version of the country that had none of the people that they hate or fear. They're people who'd burn it all down.

At 25, you might dream of studying in Rome. At 45, you might discover a business opportunity in Berlin. At 65, you might want to retire in Spain. Freedom of Movement meant you didn't have to know your future in advance. That's the extraordinary freedom Brexit took away.

It's impressive that half would. Best of luck to them, tbh. I mean in all seriousness, I'd be a crap soldier, but I'd play my part if it came to it. I think most people would if we were actually fighting for the country, not for some bullshit the US started or whatever.

Information works so differently these days… I can't help but wonder if the gradual destruction of the open Internet here is partly to make state propaganda a realistic possibility again. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I reckon people would fight a WWII-like war again (basically against an evil regime), but I don't know about WWI. I mean what were they fighting for exactly? It was some European royal families bust-up, wasn't it? No way would I fight for the king. Sorry, Charlie, mate, but it ain't happening.

The end of FoM was one of the biggest losses from Brexit. Being able to live and to pick up work all over Europe was a tremendous opportunity, especially for younger people. Unfortunately, ending it was seen as a big win by a large proportion of credulous Brexit fans.

Paul Bernal@paulbernal.bsky.social

We really have to overcome our fear of FoM. It’s a good thing!!
