I appreciate that people want a new Mass Effect, but the future where fans advocate for the work itself and not the people who make it is the one the vultures at EA want. If you'll take it however you get it, they can keep treating people who make what you love as expendable.

kotaku.comWhat Does It Even Mean To ‘Save’ Mass Effect? - KotakuThousands of fans are rallying around a campaign to save the series after BioWare's shutdown, but what does that look like?

In totally unrelated to recent events, if anyone with knowledge on the subject would be down to chat about what happens to works when a studio is shuttered, the IP Graveyard if you will, please email me or DM 💖 📧 gemmabdriscoll@gmail.com

I should have said this in the original post but I’ve had a lot of people ask- yes I can absolutely keep you anonymous if that’s what you need!

Casting a net of questionable size here, if you’re an ex-BioWare dev (or know of one who may not see this) working on something cool you’d like featured in a roundup at Kotaku, drop it below. Store page links helpful, and let me know what your role was at BW. Projects big and small welcome! RTs plz!

I’m gutted. Absolutely gutted and I don’t really have a better way of putting it There are some wonderfully written articles going over the whys and the hows but I’m tired and petty so I’m just going to (METAPHORICALLY) throw stones at EA’s nicely tinted windows. I hope it was worth it gang

BREAKING: Electronic Arts is cutting 400 jobs and shutting down BioWare, the legendary development studio behind Dragon Age and Mass Effect. www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

I’m just sad. No shocker that the Mass Effect series especially has gotten me through a LOT. And in a lot of ways it helped put me on the path I’m on now. A few years back it was a dream of mine to one day work there and put even a little bit of the joy the series gave me into something new.

I hope everyone affected can land on their feet and they know the impact they’ve helped leave on the industry, on the players and on the wider community ❤️ This fucking sucks.

The influx of AI slop on a dead internet has done more to get my screen time under control than my parents ever did and that is the only victory it is having in this house

I’m so bad at promo but I’ve been doing a series called ✨The Indie Game Gathering✨ to rant about games with demos out that you should play (so I have someone else to talk to about them)! It’s been a great outlet for yapping, dev chats and remembering the joy gaming can bring youtube.com/@geeofdee

Valve is cockblocking me from R18 games, Bluesky is routinely crash tackling me away from my DMs, LADs took away the werewolf, PlayStation is making me go to FB Marketplace. AO3 you’re all I’ve got left to keep me sane 🙏

At one point I had 17 different campaigns running and refused to finish a single one. Why finish game when I can just make new character? Family and friends feared the worst. I can tell them that after 979.8 hours, I finally saw an ending 🫡

I hope the Xeno in the new Alien game is slicked up to hell. Just a real wet monstrosity. I wanna be able to see my reflection in its jellybean of a dome as it comes lunging at me from the shadows

So I can’t read and missed the PAX media pass deadline so the pre-pax planning I had planned to eventually plan isn’t going great BUT I’m gonna be haunting the indie section and my email is open if you’re down to yap!

Y’all Splatoon Raiders is very fun and I have been taken to task eating my previous criticisms before launch (that I kept in my brain but trust they were very judgemental). Thanks @superjumpmagazine.com for letting me yap!

Don't let a little untreated concussion stop you from having fun! @geeofdee.bsky.social boldly goes where no inkling has gone before (probably). Here's her harrowing diary from the Sphiralite Islands, where angry Salmonids and copious treasures await. #SplatoonRaiders #NintendoSwitch2

Doing that classic sick thing where I reminisce about when I wasn’t sick. Oh how time flies, oh how I have squandered such vitality. May the dark claim my soul and the migraine cap calm my demons

Despite enjoying a lot of media/pop culture that have huge fanbases I don’t generally get into fandoms. I do however collect a small pocket of feral freaks in a group chat that swear under an oath of mutually assured destruction and frankly I think that’s the better way to go

This is a very good read and I massively applaud Jessica for writing about an experience that I can imagine would’ve been both incredibly jarring in the moment and nerve wracking in the aftermath

So I decided to write about how a particularly heinous incident that happened earlier this year and the ongoing Valko mess has caused me to end my relationship with Love and Deepspace www.gamespot.com/articles/im-...

Earnest call for advice because I feel like asking for help is better than stewing even if it feels silly. I have a really hard time with over explaining/over editing/over correcting myself to the point where I tail spin over getting my wording wrong or being misinterpreted 🧵

It’s only gotten worse since doing more online content and it’s made engaging with people, especially strangers, very mentally taxing. I know part of it is having a very thin skin and I know I take a lot of what is said to heart these days. But I also don’t want to be this exhausted over POTENTIAL 🧵

miscommunications or disagreements. Shocking absolutely no one it’s taken me 30 minutes to write this and I’m still not totally happy with it. If anyone has any sage advice or has traded a newborn for a bottle of courage they’d be keen to part, I’d appreciate it 💖

My favourite thing to do in Black Flag Resynced so far has been to create spontaneous conga lines of guards coming to investigate the same whistling bush they just watched their buddy disappear into

I want to re-emphasize one part of this Xbox story: Half of the 3,200 cuts are happening today and half are happening in the next 12 months. In other words, even people who survived today's layoffs will have to spend the coming year wondering if they're going to be next.

Gemma Driscoll reposted

This has probably been said before but it warrants being said again: In these types of layoffs, what happens to all the juniors? This industry cannot survive without cultivating the talent of our upcoming fresh developers. What cause do they have to pursue a career this volatile?

Gemma Driscoll reposted

Xbox has laid off 1,600 staff and divested from four studios. The number of layoffs will rise to around 3,200 over the next 12 months Double Fine and Compulsion Games will go independent, while Ninja Theory and Undead Labs have been sold to undisclosed buyers.

i'm not shocked that the ESA doesn't have anything it wants to say about this, but i'm still irritated about it

Kotaku@kotaku.com

Sony is putting an end to physical PlayStation games, and perhaps unsurprisingly, the ESA doesn't really have anything to say about it. https://kotaku.com/video-game-industry-esa-digital-ownership-2000712263
