In newspapers around the world, the report that Donald Trump raped Béatrice Keul in an Atlantic City hotel room commands huge headlines. In US corporate media, it isn't reported. Ask yourself why that might be. Here's the front page of today's Süddeutsche Zeitung in Munich.

The next party of the center-right will likely come from disaffected centrist Democrats. And that's *okay*. A lot of liberal former Republicans are now Democrats, too. As long as we agree on the Constitution and its protections, plenty of room for throwing elbows and fighting over what's best.

Every functioning democracy needs a party of the left and of the right - and both within the framework of accepted rules of a liberal constitutional order. One day I hope we get that back.

As a lifelong Democrat voter… America is better off when we have a principled Republican party, too. Be careful about treating all Republicans as irredeemable cretins. The current crop does fit that description and deserves to be shamed and run out of office — the leaders and cowardly followers.

I agree, but I must admit that I wonder if the Republican Party can ever be that sort of reasonable, pro-democracy conservative party again. The upcoming generation of Republicans really only knows Trump. No policy chops. Just transgressive bigotries as political theater.
