Geography, certainly. Two other probable factors: 1. The Caracas raid likely benefited from substantial support from the ruling party and military. It was essentially a scheming vizier trading her country's sovereignty for power.

2. I think there's a tendency to overlook differences in military capability. Venezuela's military appeared to be truly hapless, but just because Brazil is also a South American country doesn't mean they have the same vulnerabilities (maybe different vulnerabilities, though!).

A baffling take by MattY in a world that's never been more interconnected in terms of both economies and culture. Enemies of liberal democracy across the globe are delighted to find ways to mutually support each other.

Yes well it does require things like “empathy” and possessing a basic understanding that all of our lives are interconnected

American conservatives are constantly bemoaning the decline of aesthetic standards and calling for a return to tailored suits and classical Roman architecture, but are now forced to defend the Cheesecake Factory. A constant tension between the Brooks Brothers patrician and the Kid Rock populist.

intelligence is knowing that if i ever looked up anything about Magyar, Lula, or any of the other election winners i would probably not be great fans of their politics wisdom is knowing it doesn't matter because defeating the global chud coalition is all that matters for the foreseeable future

The long-serving strongman leader of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, has conceded defeat in an election that pitted him and his right-wing party against a diverse student-led opposition movement that spent two years protesting his government.

The obvious follow-up question to this sentiment is "then why have gendered sports leagues at all?" A few progressives respond that we should indeed abolish gendered sports leagues. Most, who damn well know they're full of shit on this issue, just get angry and go off on a tangent.

Geez, I wonder if anything relevant to this topic starts happening around age 12.

This drives me CRAZY. I grew up playing sports w/ boys. I played on a U12 boys select soccer team, b4 switching to a U12 girls team that kept beating us. Nobody had any issue with any of it. Youth sports have never had the strict sex/gender boundaries that “XX-XY” activists are now trying to defend.

I’m guessing the results from the first batch of GPUs in space are bad because instead of hearing about how wonderful orbital data centers are Elon has pivoted hard towards “only I can break regulations fast enough to build regular earth based data centers, unlike those losers at Coreweave”

BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) — Serbia’s strongman leader Aleksandar Vucic has conceded defeat to a student-led movement in a seismic political shift.

Because there are 10s of thousands of Democratic electeds in the United States, and you have positioned yourself directly into a media environment that is designed to find every statement a Democrat makes that is even vaguely transphobic as soon as it happens.

I just googled "Cheesecake Factory" and the interiors are much nicer than the name suggests they'd be.

As I've said before, it's only once I became a professor that I realized the entmoot, a meeting that goes on for three days and three nights, was a professor's joke about faculty meetings.

Kieran Healy@kjhealy.co

The Lord of the Rings is essentially a series of faculty meetings broken up by several long walks in the countryside.

What a shitheel. Easy to have an anti-war stance when others are shouldering the burden of national defense on your behalf.

This new electoral vídeo from Pedro Sánchez is quite something. Standing in front of Guernica defending the anti-war stance of his government, limiting military expenditure, denouncing the atrocity of Gaza. English subtitles.

Replaying Mass Effect for the first time in years, I'll be putting my thoughts here. 1. It is really unfortunate that Keith David made such a lasting impression as the President on Rick & Morty, because that's all I can think about whenever I hear his voice in any serious setting.

5. The spread on the assault rifle is absolutely ridiculous. It's hitting within the circumference of a beach ball at 10 meters.

3. Why do the combat suits for the space marines have, like, hockey visors that come down to their nose? It's a very silly aesthetic choice.

4. I'm not a scold when it comes to gear accentuating the attractiveness of different genders in different ways, but it is jarring that Ashley is introduced as a soldier but is wearing a slinky white and pink combat suit that as far as I can tell has no in-universe justification.

The correct answer to the trolley problem is that there is a meaningful distinction between redirecting an environmental hazard to minimize harm and violating the bodily autonomy of others to force them into the path of an environmental hazard. Means matter, not just ends.

"okay so you choose not to pull the lever. we count those" i mean kinda? the virtue ethics argument here is that killing someone is a violation of duty, which includes both outcomes here.

I'm pretty sure you can just nationalize SpaceX on national security grounds at a conservative price per share that reflects present value, not potential future value, and he's turbofucked.

Chrononaut@chrononaut.bsky.social

It's important to remember that Musk's wealth is based largely on the stock value of his companies. There is no enormous safe full of money, it's mostly virtual. So it's easy to shrink it by eroding the value of his companies, which can be done with taking Musk's security clearance, audits, etc.

I think very specifically it cannot be the case that the president can pardon people *in advance* for crimes of which they have not yet been convicted. That's not a pardon power, that's lawlessness.

found out that my mother in law decided she was aggressively pro trans rights literally by going, I don't know anything about this but everyone who is against trans rights is also against free school lunch, the issue I know and care a lot about, so this must be the correct way to feel about this

Obama ran on a platform of opposing gay marriage because of its unpopularity. Just because he favored soaring rhetoric and flashy posters with "HOPE" on them in big letters doesn't mean he wasn't engaged in the same triangulation as Clinton.

Matthew Sheffield@matthew.flux.community

Simple pragmatism should have dictated the abandonment of this theory of change since it never led Clinton to a majority of his own, and it was not the method that Barack Obama used in the 2008 race which he won overwhelmingly. Popularism has been a total failure during the Trump era as well.

Yeah, I think Matt's pretty obviously wrong here, but the reason he's wrong is interesting: he never updated his priors. By the time of (and in part because of) the occupation of Minnesota, immigration enforcement had ceased to be a winning issue for Trump.

Jake Grumbach@jakemgrumbach.bsky.social

A helpfully clear exchange here Hasan: "So your argument is that [Minnesota ICE protesters] should stay at home because immigration is a salient issue for Donald Trump. Opposing ICE is only going to help Trump. Wait until we win the election in 2028." Yglesias: "Yes that is what I would have said"

With that in mind, if hypothetically ICE's behavior was being cheered on by a large majority of Americans, I do think it's wise to pick your battles. Winning elections makes a major difference in the quality of life for a lot of people. Performative outrage is worthless.

Being outraged is an emotion, and people are entitled to their emotions, but *protesting* is a political act, and grown-ups should engage in political acts based on their assessment of the likely consequences, not because they're emotional.

Any queer culture writers who have written about this? I feel like there’s a very real difference between Gen Z and millennial queer culture and “I didn’t spend my formative years closeted” seems like one of the clear dividing lines.

Aubrey Gilleran@aubreygilleran.bsky.social

Like when you have students who say they’ve been out since fifth grade, it’s actually quite interesting to think about what a gay culture that’s *not* defined by the closet/being a social outcast is going to look like for Gen Z and beyond.

The US government is now asking Elon Musk to restore the access they say was never removed, Elon says was shut down by the US government, and both briefly tried to pretend was down due to a technical glitch, in between darkly hinting Ukrainians deserve to die for being stubborn or ungrateful.

TBQH I am increasingly of the belief that most democracies - certainly the US and Canada - should simply elect a king who wields power over everything but election-related matters, because the median voter engages with government as if they expect a king to get everything done.

Bioware's heart may have stopped beating in 2026, but Bioware's brain death was back in like 2012 or so. That's when grandpa's dementia meant he wasn't really there anymore, even if his body kept going. I completed my mourning of Bioware's passing years ago.

Those alternatives will not just serve defense needs, but also be viable commercial alternatives, crushing any hope of SpaceX's monopoly projections.
