Great to be opening the new @sciencemuseum.org.uk exhibition "Becoming America" this evening, open from tomorrow, free. Science & knowledge in North America 250 years ago, weaving settler, indigenous and enslaved learnings together, about power & nation building. So proud of the work team have done!

Fantastic news! What a relief

Jodrell Bank in Cheshire, the world’s largest steerable dish radio telescope at the time (now the third largest). was switched on in 1957 on this day. Built by Bernard Lovell, it was the only radar device that could track the carrier rocket of the Soviet Union’s Sputnik I.

I think about this game all the time. I loved its vaporwave aesthetics and low-fi playstation feel, but also the whole concept and setting was great and felt so ripe for other stories. Definitely check it out.

You Will Get Paradise Killer. It's still Five Literal Dollars. You will get the 9 hour free roam mystery game starring a wide bisexual woman who kicks Complete Ass and has a lot of personal problems. It owns. Use the footbaths, trust me. It has COLLECTABLES. it has SHINJI. You'll like Shinji.

A fun bit of trivia about today's physics Nobel Prize: Francis Halzen won it for envisioning and leading the IceCube Neutrino Observatory at the South Pole, but apparently he's never actually been there! WFH FTW. (To be fair, it is rather... remote.)

Freya Blekman@freyablekman.bsky.social

Besides that Francis is a really nice person too (and arguably the only experiment spokesperson who has never been to the experiment, something he likes to joke about) www.nobelprize.org/prizes/physi...

Just back from work trip to Beijing. Taught a workshop to a global selection of museum professionals, gave a paper at the world conference for science literacy, and presented a paper to colleagues at the China Science and Technology Museum, then a 2hr TV recording with some science fiction writers!

I did of course also do some holidaying and had an amazing time seeing a lot of the obvious sights as well as wandering through some beautiful hutong districts, meeting lovely people, eating delicious food, and even caught a jazz gig!

The fallacy that University leaders pushing AI are falling into is thinking that the point of undergraduate research is to find things out. It isn't. What students find out is typically already generally known. The point of undergraduate research is to learn how to find things out.

Truly spectacular photo by Jean Marquis of workers clambering on scaffolding inside the parabolic mirror structure of the solar furnace in Mont-Louis in southern France in 1958. The solar furnace in the Pyrenees, built in 1949, was the first facility of its kind in the world 🗃️

Really fortunate to have been invited to a private view of the Bayeux Tapestry this morning. Pictures cannot do it credit, it's an astonishing object displayed beautifully. Feeling very lucky!

What’s that Mira? You broke a Guinness World Record this evening as part of the largest Vulcan salute on Star Trek Day? Well done!

World record holder! This is much easier than running 100m in 9 seconds.

Being based just over the road, I often go into Imperial to get some lunch or just for a change of scenery. I am always both hypnotised, amused and horrified by this concept art on the hoarding around some renovation work they're doing.

There are words I mispronounce to this day because I read them in books for so long as a kid without hearing them out loud that I internalized an incorrect pronunciation.

Reactor was kind enough to publish a (far from capacious) deep dive into the late great Tim Curry’s filmography. Read it and comment and share as you see fit. RIP Tim.

NASA’s Roman Space Telescope could uncover oodles of potentially Earth-like exoplanets during its survey of our galaxy’s central, star-packed bulge. But astronomers probably won’t be able to learn much more about most of them.
