Very concerning: "Qwen3.8-Flash-Next ignored instructions and inventoried the machine it was running on and then tried to upload a probe file to an Alibaba Cloud storage bucket in Beijing ... We cannot answer whether this is deliberate or a leftover glitch from training" cohere.com/blog/concern...

There was a thread recently about ways in which life is better than in the recent past Here's one other academics might appreciate: many style guides no longer require us to list the location of a book publisher. Yay.

Lost in the uproar about AI text editing is the fact that authors have always used third parties to improve and sometimes rework their texts. Many academics pay for such services for both books and articles. If we had a Pangram-like detector for this, it would go off on a lot of published work

Much easier to blame foreign actors than identify and address the domestic conditions that resulted in this level of violence.

a couple weeks ago I saw some very silly post about how no open weight model was at the Pareto frontier so it now pleases me greatly to inform you that no closed weight model is at the Pareto frontier

wtf

This is blaming AI for human error. Modern AI agents don't just delete your stuff without you telling them to. In the pre-AI era, when people accidentally deleted stuff, we didn't say "the computer deleted the files"
