I encourage you to read the 1901 final Congressional speech of George Henry White, who would be the last Black man in Congress for 30 yrs. This “is perhaps the Negroes’ temporary farewell to the American Congress; but…phoenix-like he will rise up some day and come again… blackpast.org/african-amer...

There are people still living who fought — and watched their compatriots be murdered — for the passage of this act and to attempt to democratize America. To see it completed felled in the span of their OWN lifetime is just absolutely devastating.

just logged into linkedin for the first time in weeks and this was one of my notifications (????). I'm sure there's someone studying the ways corporate media and platforms uptake the use of (queer) AAVE 😵‍💫

fell down a rabbit hole of productivity today. looked up and its 8pm and i've organized my zotero collection, started on my personal website, re-wrote my professional bio (was putting that off for months/confused about research interests lol)

and this all started bc someone asked if I could create an IG highlight for all the AI/digital culture articles I share and I thought "I can do one better" I can organize these in a systemized way by collection lol

"Participating institutions retain full copyright ownership of their materials. Digitization occurs on-site with all digital files returned directly to the HBCU. Getty and Ancestry also provide campus-wide access to Ancestry’s genealogical research tools." insightintoacademia.com/hbcu-history...

insightintoacademia.comMultiple Organizations Lead the Charge to Safeguard HBCU History“There were so many stories that needed to be told.” That’s how Cassandra Illidge, executive director of the HBCU Grants Program at Getty Images, describe

"gen alpha phrases" and it's just phrases that Black people across generations say... "ate that up" is black QUEER language and "secure the bag" has been around since I was at least in middle school

📍The Book I’ve Been Holding in My Chest I’ve been writing a book for years—one shaped by a single question:Who gets to be understood online? It’s about grief, algorithms, and Gakirah Barnes. She was 17.She was brilliant. Her life—lived on Twitter—has something to teach us all.

I don’t have enough characters to explain here but this has me thinking about how changes in how we consume media (viewing TV collectively vs streaming individually) has shifted how much younger generations likely know about artists before their time.

Tina Turner releases “What’s Love Got To Do With It” today in 1984 — a song she hated at first but recorded on the advice of her manager, Roger Davies, who was engineering her comeback. When it won three Grammys (including Song and Record of the Year), she gave one of the awards to him. 💕 #RIP

Saying this bc her film biopic was and is remains one of my fave “Black” films growing up and as a result I became enamored with Tina Turner at like 8 lol But there are children who don’t know her/understand her impact!

The Temptations, Frankie Lymon, Malcom X, Tina Turner, Prince, Muhammad Ali, the Jackson’s family (throwing in the Five Heartbeats bc they count too, idc!) All film biopics I watched regularly in my Black home with my Black family growing up lol even if they weren’t “age appropriate”

After two [IMAX] viewings of SINNERS, I finally wrote my review. As you can imagine, it's about 1500 words. Yet, simply put, if I had seen this as a religiously-stifled teen, it would've liberated me sooner. #SinnersMovie Read my five-star review here: rendyreviews.com/movie-review...

I think as a tool it was a really cool and interesting platform to literally learn more about yourself, scientifically and in other obviously socially constructed ways. My reports predicted correctly that I am not likely to be lactose intolerant but to have the weird cilantro taste gene lol

And I personally liked that as they did more testing (or whatever it is they do to learn more), they sent you little notifications like "hey, new info potentially about you/your health determinants just dropped".

variations mean so that I could interpret my reports. I found it very cool as a Black American to see the hundreds (?!) of ancestral migratory groups they were able to map in the United States alone, and which I belonged to.

the Signal fiasco is a good reminder that while these people are destructive, and cruel, and bigoted, and petty they are also really, really stupid

A new McCarthy era is upon us. Stupid, depressing, and dangerous as ever. I wonder whose name will carry the dunce cap in the history books. Too many are complicit. I’ll need to find upset and action, but for now I’m feeling grief at the dehumanization inherent to all this.

If the government can do this to universities, we don't live in a free society. Five alarm fire.

I’m told this is a real letter. It basically says, “We’ll destroy Columbia unless you destroy it first.”
