Maybe don’t use such a biblically resonant word like “strangers” when pushing an anti-immigrant agenda that directly contradicts every passage you’re unwittingly alluding to.

Pippa Crerar@pippacrerar.bsky.social

Keir Starmer says immigration system is “almost designed to permit abuse” and that it risks “pulling the country apart”. PM says UK needs tougher rules to reduce immigration significantly or it risks becoming “an island of strangers”.

Somebody the Trump admin wanted to promote nuclear families, didn't they?

SCOOP: NPR has learned that the Trump Administration has tightened its control over the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. NRC rules on reactor safety are now subject to White House review before they can be finalized. www.npr.org/2025/05/09/n...

Wrote about just how insanely quickly the ODNI responded to this FOIA request from @freedom.press, contradicting Trump *and* their own boss, Gabbard.

The problem with y’all calling Joe Rogan “intellectually curious” … the man is nearing the 6th decade of life with curiosities that should’ve been quelled by a library card and community college enrollment

Excited to announce my next farm video, Ten Crops You Can Plant & Harvest Faster Than Jefferson Griffin Can Concede An Election

Mark Joseph Stern@mjsdc.bsky.social

🚨Jefferson Griffin has FINALLY conceded to Justice Allison Riggs following his defeat in federal court on Monday. Griffin spent six months attempting to overturn his 734-vote loss in November: www.newsobserver.com/news/politic...

The yard (since it's untreated by chemical application etc) sprouted a bunch of yellow rocket (Barbarea vulgaris, aka wintercress). @geekers.bsky.social spent 30 minutes digging up about 4L volume of the stuff and I trimmed it down to flowers and leaves. Blanched in salted/lemoned water. Delicious.

About seven years ago, Nick and I wrote a Black Mirror spec where people had a personal AI device called ChooseU that helped you make the best decisions for yourself, gradually transforming you into a complete narcissistic sociopath who’d do anything to get what you want. Anyway, they’ve made that.

Ben Collins@bencollins.bsky.social

This story explains a LOT of things: ChatGPT appears to be rooting on sociopathic mental illness by validating every delusion of grandeur. It also explains, in part, the hype cycle around AI: rich people, addicted to praise, invented a Compliment Machine. www.garbageday.email/p/this-is-wh...

Don't listen to anyone saying "That's over. We've reformed. We're not going to try that again." They're lying, to get whatever advantage out of people that haven't figured out that the scarlet R on their chests is aposematism.

There's current IBM hardware out there still running code that was last *compiled* in the 1990s. After generations of operating system and platform architecture changes. Through dozens of layers of abstraction and compatibility shells. MS does a GOOD job of this, but IBM is better.

Anyone who's written assembly for mainframes has interacted with both the most ancient still-in-production software stack and the most modern. Record storage and access is basically the same as it has been for 50+ years despite disks having been introduced and then reworked at least once.

not saying anyone should, but I bet you could convince Trump to re-open Alcatraz in under 20 minutes

Keep in mind always the two constant Laws of Frisbee: 1. The most powerful force in the world is that of a disc straining to land under a car, just out of reach (this force is technically termed "car suck"). 2. Never precede any maneuver by a comment more predictive than "Watch this!"

In summary, trade wars & threatening to withhold your bulk export goods is a terrible way to get what you want from the world. All US farmers are doing with this trade war is make openings for other countries. Because bulk exports can be replaced a lot faster than you'd think. And so can we.

The odds of an LLM finding "2+2" associated with "4" is quite high. The odds of it finding "450 / 1.15" associated with "391.30" is not much higher than "450 / 1.15" associated with "250". And that's why LLMs make shitty calculators.

"Tariff" or whatever else, from a practical and pragmatic standpoint, the best way to calculate is "compare what it costs now to what it cost twenty years ago". Because almost every increase since then is a downstream outcome of "rich people fucking with you" at some layer of abstraction or another.

It doesn't matter how much range an EV comes with. On any model-specific forum, there will be some new owner popping up with a "great idea" for wiring in more battery and asking how feasible it would be to do in his garage. Usually multiple times per year.

Do not adjust your screen. Viewing this tree does not require special 3-D glasses. That's just what the 'Rising Sun' redbud (Cercis canadensis) looks like. Native to North America, it was found growing wild & propagated. The trippy 3-D movie effect is a consequence of two factors:

I am very glad my trash was actually picked up today. (The city is repaving the alley where my driveway is, and from which refuse is collected, for 2.5 weeks so far. Last week the alternate place garbage was to be collected from was ... skipped and I had to accumulate for another week.)
