I’ve always been disgusted by praise for the slave states, but never drawn the connection - this IS what they want for America!

mtsw@mtsw.bsky.social

Like that's not some speculative conspiracy theory, it's very easy to find our society's elites praising how much they love Dubai and Abu Dhabi and Riyadh and then link that praise to their plans — plans they've written down for everyone to see! — like "network states" to reproduce those here

@whstancil.bsky.social what do you think of this example? I agree that ppl are in denial about LLM capabilities in the enormous realm of “computer stuff,” but it’s less clear how they perform in real-world scenarios

Colin@colin-fraser.net

I think that Andon Labs' Vending-Bench is a nice illustration of the "just don't have that dog in them" theory of LLMs. This is a benchmark where an LLM agent is tasked with running a simulated vending machine, and scored on their earnings. GPT-6 Astra recently set the record at about $15k.

Great thread on the difference between a new epidemic and an existing, endemic disease

Prof. Michael Fuhrer@michaelsfuhrer.bsky.social

In the endemic phase, R_eff always hovers fairly close to 1. If it is much smaller than 1, infections decrease, and eventually immunity wanes to the extent that R_eff starts rising again. If it is much greater than 1, infections grow, and immunity builds up, until R_eff comes down again. 18/

The Facial Expressions of Tethys by artist Julius von Bismarck. A suspended high-sea buoy that moves in real time. Sensors on a twin buoy out in the Atlantic Ocean send live satellite data to motors inside the museum. This makes the indoor buoy copy the exact, real-time movements of the ocean waves.

This Gemini jailbreak from the ancient days of February is pretty sobering

you may be interested in a style of jailbreak that's a little old now but is still pretty hard to patch, which relies on something that looks exactly like breaking your bias by knowing it (adversarial self-interpretability): recursion.wtf/posts/vibe_c...

“An El Niño is not a storm. It does not arrive with wind and fury and then recede. It is a reorganization of where rain falls on Earth... The warm water is only the mechanism; the failed harvests are what people will actually live through.“

It would be nice to see actual evidence of lab origin; instead it’s just cherry-picked private communications speculating about it

Shame on the cabal of top scientists who mocked me and other dissidents for challenging their sordid Covid origins cover-up. It is now beyond doubt that they betrayed both humanity and science - and there should be retribution. My MoS column mol.im/a/16005037

but there's also the need to do more than kick the can down the road--to arrive at a new settlement that redefines the court's power relative to the other branches here i think briley's "jury of circuit court judges" proposal is pretty good www.liberalcurrents.com/break-up-the...

In truth, I don’t even bother asking whether US policy is a good idea in the abstract anymore because it’s like having a debate over whether cars are good or bad on paper when your driver is fantastically drunk. I didn’t think about it one way or the other.

I agree that mining int'l waters is bad, but I still don't see it as justification for a strike. I'm not saying you disagree, but your language was ambiguous and I thought I would throw that out there.

Maybe I haven’t paid close enough attention, but I don’t think Sacramento is out to destroy LA (or SF, or SD) the way Albany targets NYC

I don't know, I feel like California vs. Los Angeles and San Francisco could give it a run for its money. Though I also might be biased since I grew up in SoCal.

Just shocked to learn the platform that’s half tulip mania, half money laundering, has ties to Epstein!

Peter Jukes@peterjukes.bsky.social

As Epstein courted Moscow, he built ties with Peter Thiel – first through mutual friends like Ian Osborne and Joi Ito discussing Bitcoin, then direct emails on crypto rules and funding for Blockstream. 4/12 www.febspot.com/explore/epst...
