“As part of the fellowship, they serve for two years around the CDC or deployed to health departments across the country, often on the front lines of public health responses.” We are less safe now in our own communities. I will never understand this.

My best friend was an EIS officer who went to Liberia twice during the Ebola outbreaks a decade ago, who also made me aware of how many domestic situations(so much food contamination!) never come to light because we generally contain cases so well. There’s gonna be a lot of people feeling unwell.

CDC source: “We just had word that all our fellows and post doc staff are laid off effective immediately. The famous Epidemic Intelligence Service, aka the Disease Detectives, is no more. That’s 1260 staff. They are calling this ‘Phase 1’.”

When I heard Musk say this on Tuesday, my assumption was that it was a programming issue. Because I can code and have written to databases and because I am familiar with other examples of default values being misinterpreted. Yet somehow Musk isn't.

Why does a 38-year old U.S. Attorney in SDNY, who is also a die hard conservative, have more guts and integrity than the entirety of the GOP Senate Conference combined?! Shame on the shameless sycophants and enablers there, who can’t find the spine to stand up to common MAGA bullies.

This is just sheer brazen criminality by DOJ. Adams gets federal corruption charges dropped not because there isn’t overwhelming evidence, but because he agrees to help Homan round up migrants. And Homan says the charges will be refiled if Adams doesn’t “come through.”

Congress passes a law & the agencies implement it through a “rule”, which the DOGE has labeled as “unconstitutional”. What are the agencies supposed to do to implement laws? Also, the SCOTUS determines the constitutionality of laws & rules, not the executive branch. doge.gov/regulations

They are a tiny fraction of CDC’s workforce but provide incalculable value to both CDC and the nation. Cruelly firing them with hours’ notice in the name of efficiency is an outrage. To our EIS officers, we will never forget your service to this nation.

During measles outbreaks they’ve deployed to perform contact tracing and assist with vaccinating at risk children. They deploy or provide technical assistance for foodborne, waterborne, viral, and fungal outbreaks. They investigated vaping-related lung injury. They investigate opioid overdoses.

EIS fellows are CDC's “disease detectives” first responders. They stationed at CDC and at health departments throughout the US. During the pandemic they entered houses of infected persons to gather blood samples that would assist in development of COVID-19 antibody tests and antibody treatments.

The 1st year class of Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) fellows is being terminated today. We don't know the fate of 2nd years nor the future of the EIS program. CDC’s 2-yr EIS fellowship recruits talent from across the world and trains MDs, PhDs, nurses, vets, and others in field epidemiology.

Update on the routing information breach, with numbers. This was indeed a data breach, although there is no report of what caused it. Some speculation that it may be related to DOGE interference. Targeted email sent out yesterday AM to those affected, then a later email to the wider USCG in the PM.

Marisa Kabas@marisakabas.bsky.social

NEW — In an alarming email last night reviewed by me, Coast Guard members learned that 1,135 members' direct deposit account routing information was compromised due to a data breach from unauthorized access. It was only discovered because an officer “reported anomalous activity” on their account.

it's clear to me that the trump/musk administration (along w/ the GOP) wants to create a permanent prisoner class in lieu of a slave class. they do that by reforming probation laws (look at what they're doing in Louisiana) and by removing any safety rails to keeping people out of poverty. #resist

Doge is auditing NASA today. This is absurd. The owner of Space X should not be auditing NASA. It’s a massive conflict of interest.

If I was in that room, I would hope I could convince everyone to walk out arm in arm within like 20m. bsky.app/profile/harr...

Harry Litman@harrylitman.bsky.social

Strong rumor with credible sourcing: DOJ has put all of public integrity line attorneys in a room and told them they have an hour for someone to choose who will sign motion to dismiss and if nobody does, they will all be fired. The nastiest strong-arming in DOJ history by a long shot.

jfc — what a test of public integrity

Barb McQuade@barbmcquade.bsky.social

DOJ leadership has put all Public Integrity Section lawyers into a room with 1 hour to decide who will dismiss Adams indictment or else all will be fired. Sending them strength to stand by their oath, which is to support the Constitution, not the president’s political agenda. 🇺🇸

FEMA HQ is actively trying to convince the WH / DOGE that we should be exempt from the probationary RIF due to the "public safety" and "national security" provisions. That's why other agencies have already fired probies and FEMA has not. If we are not found to be exempt, RIFs will go into effect.

People would actually care about gutting FEMA if they understood it meant the possibility of things like not receiving tornado warnings, no search and rescue teams coming to save them in an earthquake, no flood insurance, no extra medical help, no money to rebuild.

this is a good example of the attitude that has led democrats down the road to disaster. it rests on the belief that public opinion cannot be shaped or mobilized or moved, only reacted to

I don't know about Interior but I remember from a project many moons ago that Forest Service has thousands of contracts lined up & specific processes for getting people to the field to get people active and paid *yesterday* for fire management, you can't just magic that up when the fires start

Just heard: All probationary employees except fire, law enforcement, and veterans. These people are permanent employees. They have left other jobs, moved to new areas, and committed to our conservation mission. HQ found out last night. We just found out. ~420 people. #Resist #Rebel
