Omelas already exists: no need to build it or choose it. We already live here –in the narrow, foul, dark prison we let our ignorance, fear, and hatred build for us and keep us in, here in the splendid, beautiful city of life...

And those students are quite interesting, because as their arguments against Marxism (whether as an analytic tool or strictly as a style of politics) get worse, you can genuinely see them thinking, see them changing their minds. It’s wonderful. It’s my favorite reason to teach.

My classrooms are generally full of students who know nothing whatsoever about the various -isms, but most have absorbed an extraordinary amount of anti-communism. This comes out in active and passive ways, and not always (or even primarily) when reading Marx, Luxemburg, Lenin, Gramsci, etc.

If Fidel Castro was no saint then how do you explain this?

Uphold Karl Polanyi Thought@highestmarx.bsky.social

Hot take I guess but Fidel was a politician, not a saint. It may well be true that Castro had (relatively) cleaner hands than many US presidents but be serious,.

Counterpoint: it is impossible to aggressively assert decent values without shaming the indecent

Hiding in the Attic@hidingintheattic.bsky.social

We can absolutely still stand up for our own values without employing shame. That’s what this whole discussion is about. Whether we should try to SHAME VOTERS. Shame makes people move away from the group shaming them and towards the group who accepts them. Shame is the WORST persuasion strategy.

One of my favorite things is just learning more about indivisible aviators, like Relly “Raffles” Raffman, a piano and saxophone player who dropped out of Dartmouth to join the navy. Flew 75 missions with VF-25. After the war, he became a classical composer and professor at Clark University

"we welcome anyone who recognizes the danger Trump and his extremist MAGA agenda pose to hard-working Americans who can no longer afford basic goods because of his immoral and unnecessary war..." come on man, 'take the question and pivot to an attack' is not that hard

WELKER: Do democratic socialists belong in the Dem Party? JEFFRIES: What I can say is I do not support defunding the police, I do not support open borders, I do not support abolishing the Senate. We're focused on actually solving the problems hard-working American taxpayer want us to solve ...

BREAKING: the Democratic National Committee just unanimously approved a resolution calling for the abolition of ICE! After terrorizing our friends, families, and neighbors, ICE has no place in our nation. I'm grateful @democrats.org agreed. Now we're onto the hard work to make that happen!

The absolute state of British media. Human smegma.

Stephen, even by your increasingly aggressive standards, your comments about me here are deeply shocking and offensive. I don’t really have anything further to say to you, I just hope you’ll reflect on whether this is an appropriate thing to post so soon after someone killed themselves.

Literally nothing The Atlantic has published in the last decade on higher ed describes the academic world I live in. It’s an insult to my colleagues and it’s absolutely incomprehensible to my students.

jon ben-menachem@jbenmenachem.com

You won't see NYT and The Atlantic running breathless quit-lit written by people who were adjuncts for a decade at a regional comprehensive before they were pushed out of the profession. The stories they relentlessly promote almost always focus on "DEI overreach" at elite higher ed orgs.

The George Floyd protests were an orgy of destruction. Whole cities sacked. Woke 1 was a nightmare of mob rule that blighted the lives of millions. That’s the level of hallucination you need to sustain to justify Trump II.

Michael Hobbes@michaelhobbes.bsky.social

I’m not going to defend the dumbest online cancellations of 2016-2024. Even if you think they were injustices, though, we are talking about maybe 100 people, mostly public figures, losing their jobs. That’s around a quarter of the number of firings after Charlie Kirk was killed.

Trying to imagine Biden or Obama or Clinton heading into midterms with a 17% approval rating with independents and how the press would cover that

YouGov America@today.yougov.com

NEW Economist/YouGov Aug 7-10 % who approve | disapprove of Donald Trump's job performance U.S. adult citizens: 33% | 62% Democrats: 4% | 95% Independents: 18% | 71% Republicans: 79% | 21% d3nkl3psvxxpe9.cloudfront.net/documents/ec...

The gawking is one of middle age’s few new pleasures. Goes well with the occasional head shake/chuckle. Well how do ya like that?

Snowden St.@snowden.st

Obama announced his run for WH in Feb 2007. In May 2007, Abdul El-Sayed opened for Bill Clinton at U of M commencement. Helluva thing, becoming a middle aged guy. You get to gawk at all kinds of wonders.

God help me I’d vote a Newsom/Emanuel ticket if they pledged to convict and punish the 500 most corrupt members of Trump’s regime

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

so Mark Walter, who was at the White House recently, is under investigation by the Trump administration and just so happened to abruptly sell one of America’s premier sports franchises to the brother of Trump’s son in law 🤔

Explaining to horrors of Woke One to a resident of Kyiv as we hustle into the bomb shelter: “It was a nightmare. Politicians took a knee. Some c-suite suits pretended to like some cringe books. Really, I think we share the same struggle.”

Peter@notalawyer.bsky.social

finally reading the Atlantic piece on “Woke 1” and it’s interesting how even in their attempt to list the movement’s sins they struggle to identify anything significant
