"we welcome anyone who recognizes the danger Trump and his extremist MAGA agenda pose to hard-working Americans who can no longer afford basic goods because of his immoral and unnecessary war..." come on man, 'take the question and pivot to an attack' is not that hard

WELKER: Do democratic socialists belong in the Dem Party? JEFFRIES: What I can say is I do not support defunding the police, I do not support open borders, I do not support abolishing the Senate. We're focused on actually solving the problems hard-working American taxpayer want us to solve ...

I didn't have the highest expectations for Jefferies, but I was hoping I could be shown that he would do good. The level to which I shot in the other direction...

He absolutely did take the question and pivot to an attack... he's just attacking the left and attempting to discredit it the new members of his party that he realizes he has no control over.

Well, he took the question and pivoted to attack... members of the DSA who are currently actively working with Democrats nationwide to be elected or to get Democrats elected to stop Trump. Brilliant work from the one guy who seems to be worse than Chuck Schumer as a leader and messenger.

Right. Personally I have a problem with the substance of the answer but that is the second-biggest problem. The biggest is that this is not the answer given by a wartime consigliere

His instincts are atrociously bad. The correct answer is “do you ask Republicans if rapists and domestic abusers and crooks belong in the Republican Party?” Always be attacking.

He did go on the attack, though. Jeffries and the other establishment Dems believe they have more to fear from primaries on their left than general election opponents on their right. DSA is donor poison, which threatens Democratic revenue streams that keep the establishment in comfort and luxury.

The problem is he is accepting the lines of attack as legitimate and using right wing framing and gop taking points. The most important thing he can do is push back on the bullshit framing. These are not things that serious progressives are prioritizing and by pretending they are he harms all Dems.

This exactly. He's so afraid of touching third rails that he's letting the GOP essentially dictate certain issues to be third rails under threat of protection racket. Often positions that a majority of the voting public actually likes or which are near-zero salience on voting decision-making.

Hell he could have just said "It's the right of all Americans to choose who represents them and I will work with whoever the American People chose, unlike the Republicans who are already working to lay the groundwork to challenge or ignore the results of this November's election."

I truly want to believe that democrats hate republicans more than demsocs and for most of the party that’s clearly true but there are a handful of glaring and powerful exceptions

Lots of stones being thrown at small states when the primary calendar was being set from CA and NY and… my god they both need to get their own damn houses in order.

“drain the swamp” in 2016: hateful rhetoric. guy sucks. loser shit. pure jealousy and half-cocked conspiracy theory trash “drain the swamp“ in 2026: …alright listen,

the other problem, which recurs regularly and isn’t Jeffries-specific, is that the job of Speaker/Minority Leader is mostly about wrangling the caucus but because the party doesn’t have an official leader when it doesn’t hold the White House they end up the party face different skill set!

The root of the issue is Democrats select congressional leadership based on fundraising rather than ability. Schumer and Jeffries are not leaders, they are the interface between the party and its financial backers. When you understand this of them everything else falls into place.

Absolutely true! But the parties have known for decades that being a public spokesperson is a crucial part of the job. There is no excuse for them choosing leaders who are bad at it.

"What I can say is that I'm hqppy to repeat the GOP framing of every issue with my answer and use this framing to attack anyone to the left while saying 'nuh-uh' if anyone accuses me of supporting these policies"

you can even still work in a hit if you like. "haha, I'll worry about pie-in-the-sky nonsense like (foolish leftist cause here) _after_ we've dealt with Donald Trump's corruption, inflation, and stupid war."
