WELKER: Do democratic socialists belong in the Dem Party? JEFFRIES: What I can say is I do not support defunding the police, I do not support open borders, I do not support abolishing the Senate. We're focused on actually solving the problems hard-working American taxpayer want us to solve ...

Getting rid of ICE is now the majority opinion *among Republicans* The one and only way to poach Republican voters like they always want to do so bad is this: You offer them something they want that the GOP **isn't** offering. Like, say, getting rid of ICE.

I went looking. As of July 21 of this year, only 24% of Republicans “somewhat or strongly support” abolishing ICE compared to 73% of Republicans and that number is lower among MAGA voters. He’s not reverse-psychologing them. He’s just regurgitating GOP talking points.

I saw some poll results this morning that 54% of Republicans polled want to get rid of it. Mind you it might be a product of how the question was asked, or it might be that they think ICE is making their party look bad, but still.

Things are going great; moderates winning, progressives winning, dem socialists winning, and all unifying after primary. Cruise control to majority in November, easy. SO WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS SHIT???? Like, fuck off Jeffries. This is a garbage of an answer.

Thanks for passing that on. I didn’t know it existed. It does not, however call for abolishing the senate or defunding police. It also does not list any names of politicians who associate with all of these policies. It does indicate that this group has been working since 2025.

It will be a mixed caucus of "moderates," progressives, and socialists. That would be an OK big tent if it's simply ideology that causes the disagreements. But what needs to be addressed regarding the "moderates" is how many of them are, like Republicans, bought and sold shills for big corporations.

This is so disingenuous. The DSA does not want to abolish the police. They seek to demilitarize them and ask that they serve the local community, not follow a federal mandate. The DSA seeks fair representation in the senate.

If we are more alike than we are different, FOCUS ON THAT!!! Do NOT pull the shit you did with Mamdani in this election. You are NOT acting like a leader, whoever does, LEADS US ALL!

Show me you're a bot or fool in the comments who can't politics and needs to get blocked without saying "I'm a bot or fool in the comments who can't politics"

Another comment section that tells me we're going to fuck it up again with infighting vs. attacking maga just like '24. Better pack my allowed one small bag for the camp I'll be tossed in soon for being a Dem and having a Bluesky account..

I see no infighting in the comments here. Seems pretty universal no one approves of Jeffries. So if there is any infighting you can put the blame on the “Establishment” siding with their big money donors over what base of the party is becoming.

That he couldn't get such a simple thing right is further proof that he shouldn't be leading anyone or anything. We need unity and he's obviously unable to achieve that without pissing off his rich donors.

Yes, good, you've demonstrated that there's a constituency that likes those proposals. Your next task is to demonstrate that alienating that constituency is a good tactic.

95,000 people belong to the DSA I wish the progressive Dems would have rebranded as “New Deal Democrats”—which AES invoked—instead of giving the right wing media everything they could have dreamed of

For a Speaker who hails from the city that elected Mamdani, in an election cycle that has to be “vote blue no matter who” if we are to survive as a nation, this was a stunningly tone deaf response.

Incorrect. It means you don’t want to push back on bad faith framing and deliver results for working people. Go vote for Fetterman or something. That’s what you are advocating for.

Wonder why few noted the lameness of the question by Welker. Ask lame question, get lame answer. So called "Dem Socialists" are simply so called Dem progressives on the party's political continuum. I prefer to hear about specific policy not where a subgroup's ideology stands on that continuum.

I know this is a poor response politically. I do though want to give Jeffries a chance though to grow into the majority leader's job. His mentor wasn't masterful rhetorically either, but sure could get things through the house.

Figuratively everyone understands it's figurative no one actually wants to get rid of customs enforcement and immigration enforcement. Do you think drug cartels should be able to drive truckloads of fentanyl over the border? Because if we got rid of customs enforcement they could.

Abolish ice just means change the name and reform how it's done. Changing the name is meaningless. Essentially it's the reformation of how it operates that matters. Do you think Americans want open borders?

Vampiric parasitic fuck. Yet another Schumer-esque coward courting destruction of the entire country to fatten his own pockets. Truly, the most yellowbellied and disgusting traitors.

And in replying, he repeats and reinforces the most fringe policies that scare swing voters. Jesus, Dems are bad at this. Instead say "Many of their positions are the same as Democratic party positions and I support those wholeheartedly, then name them - universal health care, fair taxation, etc.

Jeffries is the leader of a big tent party. We Dems are not lock step like Reps are. So maybe shut up and do the hard work we all need to do to take back our country. If you direct your ire at Jeffries instead of Trump you are helping Trump.

This is why Jeffries sucks. He could have easily talked about the things that they agree on too, but he didn't. Being a big tent party will always mean there will be a diversity of ideas, and failing to grasp and appreciate that means he is unfit for party leadership.

The first thing on the American people’s minds is to have Trump impeached and removed from office. If Democrats start talking about slow walking investigations without impeaching Trump, voters may just decide to stay home. People are tired of lip service.

Unless the Senate has 67 votes to convict and remove the impeached president, tRump will serve out his term. Unless of course he dies in office. I highly doubt any Republicans would vote to remove. I also don't see Dems control 2/3's of the senate.

What a tool. We need him to go back to being a senator instead of speaker. He has never hit me as being particularly savvy answering any kind of questions. You stand with the party and who the PEOPLE put forward by voting. In my neck of the woods our response to his answer is Shithead!

Jeffries is a relic. The obvious popular opinion wants what progressives bring. Established Dems only want to block what people actually need. He speaks as though progressives are more of a threat than Trump.

A Republican listens to this, decides "Jeffries is not that bad I guess", and then... votes for the Republican. Meanwhile, the Democrat wonders why he should support a candidate whose declared enemy is other dems, rather than repubs. Pandering to the center caused the dems to lose to a rapist.

Republicans: "Huh that Jeffries isn't so bad." Votes Republican Centrists: "Man those leftists scare me I should do something about it." Votes Republican Leftists: "Well if they don't want us why should we help them?" Votes Third Party And that's why America will never be freed at the ballot box

A fact I always come back to is that, to a European, America's politics are all off by about one degree right. When you understand the American "centrist Dems" are what a European would call "The Conservative Party" a lot of their cozying up to MAGA makes more sense.

We don't need a "House of Lords" which is what the senate is. Isn't it sad how the Constitution has specific rules for how the House is suppose to run, while the Senate rules are "Make up whatever rules you want." The existence of the Senate was a mistake and should be fixed, but thats long term

If that's the Dem-socialists' (or anyone's) understanding of the Constitution, again I say, keep them OUT of government! That's NOT the *original intent* of the Senate. We need the Senate. We need better Senators.

"Original" intent is irrelevant. The founders are dead. Their opinion means nothing. I care about the practical implementation. The practical application of the senate is to stop the poors from getting what they want. Sorry if I don't think rich people should have a veto.

1.) "I do not support defunding the police"- if that was ever proposed, it lasted for like FIVE MINUTES before becoming "Maybe we shouldn't load up tons of duties on cops that they're not equipped or trained for, maybe we should move SOME of the RIDICULOUSLY GIANT SUMS given to them to services"

2.) "I do not support open borders" - Okay, that has not been, nor will be, a thing. No Democratic President has supported or had open borders. Heck, Obama deported TONS of people. The only reason the borders are porous AT ALL is because business figures love cheap labor.

3.) "I do not support abolishing the Senate", look, Vichy Dem, the Senate is undemocratic and always has been. When a FREAKIN' GINORMOUS High-Pop State like California has two Senators, and LARGE Mostly Empty States like Wyoming & Alaska have two Senators apiece, that's a gross power disparity.

4.) "We're focused on actually solving the problems hard-working American taxpayer want us to solve" No you bloody aren't. You and the rest of the current Dem leadership are way more interested in keeping your salaries and power over solving problems.

Most Democrats do not necessarily support those things, but most of us support a universal healthcare system, lifetime public education, national childcare assistance, and many other “socialist” programs that other countries have had for decades.

This is outrageously stupid from leadership! What a losing strategy he demonstrates. The answer is yes. Period. Yes. The answer is yes!

The tragedy for us is the DSA/far Left is fracturing the Democratic Party-Our ONLY means of ousting Trump & Republicans & saving our democracy. That helped elect Trump TWICE. NOW is the time to UNITE to STOP this regime. THEN we can rebuild DEMS. Attacking DEMS instead of Trump? I have questions.

Perhaps you need to question yourself. Pointing out the weak spot on an otherwise excellent team is not "dividing the team". It's giving the team a chance to improve before the game kicks off. There is nothing more toxic to structural success than ignoring a part that can't carry its weight.

WOW. Maybe you don't realize in our 2-Party system only the DEMS remain to topple this regime. If we don't win sufficient majorities in HOUSE & SENATE in NOV, Trump & Republicans remain in TOTAL control. We won't have another chance. DEMS are a BIG-TENT Party ranging from moderate & beyond 1/2

Support aggressive climate policy, support Medicare 4 All, support getting money out of politics, shutdown Gestapo-style ICE action. Instead of amplifying anti-DSA memes, push the positives which the American people, and-supposedly-the greater democratic party agree with. But no, that's too hard.🙄

This applies to this thread too: bsky.app/profile/thim...

@timothysnyder.bsky.social was asked about this in this interview with Katie Couric: youtu.be/rLbmbS2vPNk?... "We have to have something better and new and it's not going back to Biden. It's not going back to Obama. It's not going back to Clinton..."

The correct response: “They do if they are voting for Democrats or running as Democrats. The better question Kristin, is do rapists belong as the head of the Republican Party? What do you think?”

Like adding to the Supreme Court? Removing powers from the executive branch? Separating the DOJ from the White House? Or writing strongly worded letters?

Ohhhhhhh, maaaan! Please just put me out of my misery. I’m a blue voter. OK! BUT…we are in serious trouble with nonsense like this coming from Jeffries. Why not just tell everyone to go lay down on their local freeway and let an 18 wheeler run over their heads 😠

As an outsider, it seems to me that 'democratic socialists' are doing a rather good job. Zohran Mamdani is doing a stunning job in NY. Whilst the 'normal' democrats have been useless at holding the orange rapist to account

Democratic Socialists are needed to keep Democrat ideals from being watered down too much. As MAGA moves further and further to extremes the "middle" has been pulled in their direction, becoming essentially MAGA-lite. DSA offers a counterbalance.

I find it funny. Standard, normal democrats would be regarded as right wingers in most democratic socialist countries in Europe. US democrats don't seem to have a leftish agenda at all.

This guy isn’t focused on anything but his desire to be speaker & keep the do nothing agenda of the dem establishment while everyday Americans suffer. New Yorkers wakeup and vote this loser out. Put a doer not beholden to the lost their way dem establishment in the role of speaker. We can do better
