If there’s one thing broadcasters wanted more than a Milwaukee/Tampa World Series, it’s a Milwaukee/Tampa World Series laugher sweep.

This argument sounds reasonable and may even be sound in specific circumstances. But I have two objections. 🧵

If you can make AI do more of the effort of writing the actual lines of code, that gives you more time to think about whether that code is the code you should be writing, and less attachment to the code if it turns out ripping it out and redoing it is the right answer.

Objection 1: Writing is Thinking Often—not always, not for everyone, but often!—writing the code is integral to thinking deeply about whether the code should exist. When this is true, “I can think more about the code because I didn’t have to write it” starts degrading into nonsense.

Objection 2: Workload Paradox In a corporate context, any efficiency gains from new tech quickly lead to equal or greater increase in the output management expects from workers. And very few companies are measuring “output” in a way that rewards better decisions about what code should exist. So.

they should get rid of the designated hitter and just let the pitcher try to throw a base hit when it’s his turn at the plate. that’s the way it always should have been

Good luck to our MLBPA union brothers on the Brewers and Rays tonight as they start the World Series! Play ball, and solidarity forever. ⚾️✊

No feeling quite like demolishing your spouse and three children at a tabletop game. What a rush!

I’ve been listening to these games on radio broadcasts and damn does the PA system in Dodger Stadium sound loud.

So on some level it is true to say that we can't be certain LLMs are conscious. But this is more or less as true as saying that we can't be certain WE are conscious. It's because we don't understand consciousness well, not because we have any evidence that Claude possesses it.

Still searching for this killer app, which, when realized, will tempt me to violate all of my principles in persuit of the ultimate high.

Where is the AI where I can prompt, “Play me the Busta verse from Scenario synced over the I Like It Raw beat”?

This right here is how you modus fucking tollens.

AI makes it easier to write software, and that's bad

In The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, the most advanced spaceship in the galaxy, The Heart of Gold, gravely endangers its crew by diverting all of its electrical power and CPU to the task of making Arthur Dent a cup of tea. Thinking about this for no particular reason.

I know plastic is bad, but man do I love a gallon ziplock. You fill that bad boy up and say to yourself, “I have a gallon of cauliflower” or whatever. Now that’s what I call living.

not wrong, but seems like this argument really should run more strongly in the other direction? "my computer is having thoughts rn" seems like the sort of claim that should rightly be met with initial skepticism and further questions, even if you can't give a good account of what it means to think

Teefa@tifaret.bsky.social

new rule: You can't say "AI doesn't think" until you post 1) a measurable, falsifiable definition of thinking 2) that includes humans by those measurements 3) and excludes AI by those measurements Bonus points for a definition that isn't ableist or dehumanizing to ND humans.

Despite years of research by our greatest minds there still exists no human technology powerful enough to stop Pete Buttigieg from texting me.

What’s the world-changing, live-saving tech these degenerates think is worth devoting 80-hour weeks to, you ask? SEO but for LLMs. (Fart noise implied.)

Saw this going around. How is the blue category not labeled “Yes, you can”? We used to live in a society. Well I’m gone.

Ok, sure, but tech folks aren’t equipped either. I may have dropped out of my philosophy PhD but I’m here to tell you that “what would it mean for a machine to think?” is not a technology question.

em@foremphasis.bsky.social

You've got people who have never thought about tech in their lives asserting that AI cannot truly think because it uses mathematics. These are folks who are clearly not equipped to be talking about that stuff, but for some reason everybody has to talk about that now.
