To say that I was nervous about this weekend would be a bit of an understatement, but Bristolcon was brilliant, and made me feel like I've not been wasting the last decade of my life with this writing nonsense. It may have given me enough hope to tackle the next one, too. #bristolcon

The lessons from Brazil and Serbia? Don't concede one inch of ground to the far right. Don't appease. Don't triangulate. Don't grovel. Don't say they have "legitimate concerns". Mobilise your base, and fight them with all the democratic means at your disposal.

Okay so when I joined the queue at 10am (had been waiting since 8.45) I was at position 133,933. Now, 23 minutes later, that's gone down by a whopping 1,351. So, if that timing holds, and assuming it doesn't sell out during my wait, I should reach the front of the queue in 37.6 hours. Cool cool cool

Decoding 'grievance artist' Melanie Phillips and the framing of protests in Europe. A very useful and necessary piece from @brokenbottleboy.bsky.social

Approving the Jackdaw gas field solves none of our problems, while contributing to the existential crisis of climate breakdown. The government has privileged special interests above the general interest. It's a shameful, cowardly decision.

And, lastly, there's the very, very silly second Reacher book, in which Reacher takes on the Far Right and beats them all up. Enjoyably Nazi punching, which makes up for the questionable quality otherwise.

popfeed.social★★★½ review of Die Trying (1999) • PopfeedListening on audiobook really brought home how stilted and repetitive Child's writing is, but none of that stopped me being entertained by Reacher rampaging through a far right boot camp. Make this bo...

I once left a really good job as a newspaper editor to go to a new job at a magazine, when I turned up everyone was shooting daggers at me, turned out they’d not been paid for a month and were livid that they were hiring people. By the end of the second day customs and excise shuttered the business.

I don’t give a fuck about what the public ‘reckon’ about diagnoses, especially when the reckoning is in large part due to a concerted media campaign over recent years.

YouGov@yougov.co.uk

With much media coverage of a government report that ADHD and autism are being over-diagnosed, a claim which some experts have disputed, half of Britons now believe that the conditions are being over-diagnosed Over-diagnosed: 50% Under-diagnosed: 17% About right: 17% yougov.com/en-gb/daily-...

Radical publishing notion, right here: if your publishers are making a living from publishing and selling your books, then you, the author, should be making a living from writing them.

Canada is refusing to issue ISBNs to books primarily generated with AI. This illustrates both the urgency of the problem of the growing flood of slop books, and also the toothlessness of addressing it on the honor system without there also being consequences for lying

Today's (UK) headlines include a man on trial for murdering his wife, a man who has pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a woman who had been drugged by her husband for men to abuse, and a man convicted of stalking his ex and threatening to throw acid on her. All white British men. No riots?

I think this will be one of the defining images of the Premier League's void years: a proudly working class fanbase celebrating that the ruling family of an oppressive regime had hired a barrister on £10,000-an-hour to try and prevent them suffering consequences for their cheating. Embarrassing.

Dream scenario: City are expelled from the football pyramid, must reapply to their local non-league tier, and work their way back up. City's owners are also forced to sell and are banned from any future ownership.

Of course, there's just as much chance it'll be a two year transfer ban (deferred for one year to allow them to get one last window in), a big fine, and a nominal points deduction.

Here's to all the writers, pacing their offices, repeatedly acting out the action they're trying to describe, in the hope they can summon the word for that action from the dark recesses of their brains. I see you, and yeah, I do this most days 🖤

This is a good deep-dive into AI slop invading what used to be legit media sites. One thing I’m seeing more and more: slop outlets churning archaeology stories from 1-5 years ago and presenting them as news. 🏺🧪
