Bombshell: Greg Abbott’s senior team met secretly with Big Tech two days before the state made it easier and faster for data centers to connect to Texas’s electrical grid. In Greg Abbott’s Texas, billionaires come first and Texans come last.

Take it to the ballot box, everyone. Go vote. Go in person or go early (if you can't on Tuesday itself). I am not confident in the Blue Wave because of statistical reasons and the psychology of Trump's voters. Please, please, please go vote and prove me wrong.

Joe Walsh@walshfreedom.bsky.social

Americans right now are righteously angry & full of fear at what Trump is doing to this country. Anger & fear are great motivators. And what I heard this past weekend in Omaha confirmed to me that a big old blue wave is coming. Today’s piece.👇 socialcontractwithjoewalsh.substack.com/p/notes-from...

I don't know which is the more humiliating part. That people believe this will have an impact on diesel prices or that your country is siding with evil.

A new survey of 1,000 American adults found that the strongest supporters of transgender sports bans are not the people who admire women most: they are the people who hold the most hostile views about women. www.helenwebberley.com/news/transge...

Oh, dear. I had the good fortune to meet him a few times at conventions and had lunch with him once in Australia. Such a lovely fellow and of course an iconic figure in science fiction. RIP.

My pal Danielle Koenig shared that her father Walter Koenig passed away last night at age 90. A performer whose kindness and warmth shone through the screen. He will be well remembered.

My initial impressions of the S-1 are that it's not a pile of dog shit like SpaceX. I've ignored the doom and gloom sections, as the best case is they don't believe it. And the most charitable interpretation is they want to use fear mongering as marketing.

A reminder that buying US munitions can come with crazy strings attached. If a few counties in four or five states decide eggs are to expensive, you may find you can’t defend your own people.

From Zelenskyy. Patriot interceptors that could save innocent lives are sitting in European countries for weeks, which they paid for, unable to be transferred to Ukraine because Hegseth refuses to sign off.

We opened up that can of worms with decapitation strikes. There’s always a threat to leaders but they are we’ve sent the signal they are as legitimate a target as a refinery.

US officials say they see the highest threat level from Iran since the start of Trump and Netanyahu's war. They say intel shows Iran is in the "advanced stages" of planning to attack US officials — not only in the Middle East, but in Europe and the US too. Gift link: www.nytimes.com/2026/10/23/u...

"After fighting Chavistas and their Russian, Iranian, and Cuban allies for so long, nobody in Venezuela’s historically pro-American democratic opposition ever expected a U.S. administration to stand in their way. But if it does, they are preparing to fight that obstacle too."

A wild story: the CEO of a US energy company whose plans were discussed during the Witkoff-Kushner-Putin negotiations resigns. Why? He learned that his company's main investor is a sanctioned Russian company, not the UAE www.nytimes.com/2026/10/23/u...

When this goes to shit, and Amazon has to figure out what to do with a bunch of GPUs, they won't show up on Ebay. Unless you have (likely) three-phase power in your house and serious plumbing, they won't do you any good.

Ed Zitron@edzitron.com

As I said earlier on Yahoo Finance, Jensen Huang is channel stuffing to pump NVIDIA's revenues, forcing GPUs on customers months in advance and making everything more expensive for everyone. It's morally reprehensible. finance.yahoo.com/video/spacex...

LMAO -- Exclusive Senior Adviser to First Lady Melania Trump Marc Beckman claims Melania is "negotiating a ceasefire" between Russia and Ukraine

$20 per million tokens produces ~1 million over a 5 year asset life. At $1 per token, it produces about ~55k and barely covers just the cost of the GPU. While the exact amounts may differ (20k tokens per minute or 35k or 85% utilization and not 100%, etc), the problem doesn't change. 6/7

Relative to other things we do on the web, the price to do inference is still shockingly high for a customer base used to free stuff. How much would Muse have to earn from advertising, or charging a vig to preferred merchants, to overcome that math? 7/7

If you're answer is 'but the cost is coming down,' I would submit you suffer from a bit of bad math. If a GPU costs $50k, and spits out 20k tokens every minutes, it produces ~30 million tokens per day. If the retail price is $1 or $20 per million tokens, it doesn't much matter. 4/7

It still only spits out 30M tokens per day. At $1, that means it earns $30 per day (before all the other costs). At $20, it produces $600 per day (before other costs). If the retail price per token falls, all it does is reduce margins. 5/7

Each part of that took a few milliseconds of compute on some computer serving up (possibly hundreds) of simultaneous requests. For a few milliseconds I tied up a fraction of a few computers. Does a LLM work this way? No. A request to a LLM takes up the entire set of resources. 2/7

I tie up the resources of few computers for a few seconds (but possibly several seconds) at a time. The response comes back to my computer, which then does what the LLM told it to do. To have it going "constantly," means I'm using a lot of someone's computer resources. 3/7

Vote like this is the last election. Because unless Republicans lose their majorities in the House AND Senate, it very well could be.

The Lincoln Project@lincolnproject.us

Republicans control every branch of government and what did they give you? Higher gas prices. Higher cost of living. Higher healthcare costs. Higher inflation.
