If the Greens do get into government, we are going to discover all these "powers" the House of Lords has that we never got rid of but which are now really convenient for fucking up a left-wing legislative programme.

I'll be blunt and articulate what we all know: no one who mattered died so don't hold your breath.

What does it mean when your political tendency is so poisonous that tanks a PM with an election rigging-sized majority? What does it mean when you're trying to keep on going by hiding your tendency under a new PM's flat cap? Cackling with glee as they salt their own earth is what it means.

My take, fwiw, is that the Canary outlasted McSweeney, and that's part of what makes these losers so gleeful about getting their way. Everyone got a good hard look at McSweeney and co's politics and they fucking hated it with a a passion and that drives these freaks wild.

flyingrodent@flyingrodent.bsky.social

Adam’s point here is that Morgan McSweeney’s secret wrecking operation in 2018-19 - the one that he and his buddies have since spoken about at some length - included a concerted effort to destroy that publication and put it out of business. He’s gloating, here.

For myself: I was a pretty boring Guardian liberal at the start of this century. I am not one today because I noticed that if you are one, you will constantly find yourself being shouted at, denounced, blocked and screwed over by the people who are theoretically on your own side, representing you.

Even now, absolutely clueless that they got diddled by some of the most bleak and horrible cynics in British politics. Yer Da can at least wave his tattered Union flag and say he won. FBPE got dick.

It’s almost like they waited and waited until at last, a reliable yes-man like Keir Starmer was leading the opposition, because he’s a company man and he won’t make trouble. Almost like this quality is what all the lads were referring to, when he was said to be An Adult, Back In Charge.

Britain doesn’t end up with Prime Minister Boris Johnson - along with Gove, a newspaper columnist - in a meaningfully real democracy. That can only happen if our democracy is a sham and a shitshow, where a tiny number of horrible London wankers decide who should be in charge and what the agenda is.

They *fucking hate you* and they will do and say anything to fuck you over, they will gladly sink the island under the sea to spite you. They have proven it over and over.

I get that people liked a nice, soft, hippy Green Party that focused only on the environment, and could be happily ignored, and Greens patted on the head with a little ‘there, there’, and don’t like radicalism that undermines comfortable capitalism. Those days are over.

I mean, to be fair to the Greens, it really is the case that labour supporters want any excuse to back the party. All labour has to do is not tell them to fuck off quite so clearly. Until people stop endlessly, and naïvely, giving the benefit of the doubt we'll be here again and again.

A government almost nobody ever liked or wanted, led by genuinely repellent freaks, only in power in the first place because their opponents were a malignant calamity and because the British press had propped them up and carried them aloft for several years, then all but thrown them into power.

Like. Let's put it this way. I can well believe there are ordinary members of the public who believe Zack Polanski is a worse threat to Jewish safety than Elon Musk, Peter Thiel and Stephen Miller. But I don't think any of the people writing the articles to convince them of that really believe it.

benjka.bsky.social@benjka.bsky.social

I live in Holborn and St Pancras and we’re going to vote for you, but that silly Zionism vote - which you as a leader did nowhere near enough to stop, means you will not get my vote (or my daughter’s). And I have ended my membership of the Green Party.

Number Six reposted

Noooo. You don't understand. The Zionism that I have in my head is pure and just and noble, and when you criticise actually existing Zionism (that is the cause of an ongoing, live-streamed genocide), that makes me feel really sad and personally attacked!

I also want to add the talk of "self determination" is always wheels out without context as if it's some sort of moral right. E.g. let's take the UK, if I talk about the indigenous English right to self determination, you know exactly what the fuck I'm talking about and it's not good is it?

flyingrodent@flyingrodent.bsky.social

I try not to use the term when others are more appropriate, but this is just gaslighting. Most of Gaza is destroyed to bulldozed rubble and nobody who matters is even speaking up about it, because they know what would happen to them and their careers if they do.

As ever with Freedland, the purpose of the exercise is to cast Israel as a historic exception rather than as a late example of colonial settlement and racist governance. This goes beyond invoking the Holocaust to equating all Jews with Israel and anti-Zionism with antisemitism.

Your average Labour voter is a white bloke in his 50s…he’s not thinking back to 1979 when the bin men went on strike…he’s thinking back to 2025 when he could access pornography without asking his teenage son how to use ‘one of them VPN things…can you download me one lad? What for? Nothing really…’

As I said early on about Keir Starmer: a British politician’s job is not to represent your interests to e.g. the private water company. His job is to come *to you*, look suitably biscuit-arsed, and then explain that sadly nothing can be done. And usually retire to a plush private sector gig.

A skate park does more to reduce knife crime than “more bobbies on the beat”, the only difference is middle class white people are scared of groups of kids at skate parks and they’re comforted by the presence of the police.

paranormal mattivity@windows98support.bsky.social

The problem with solving youth crime is you need to spend a lot of money now, for results you won’t see for 10-15 years. And not a single politician is willing to look beyond the next election cycle. Like, we know the answer, it’s skate parks and youth clubs.

My ideal situation would be, essentially, we get to a place where a kid from a South London council estate could, if they so wished, go to the local youth centre and learn to play the violin. But, then, we come back to this, the reason it will never happen:

Scornflake Ghhhoul@scornflakegrrrl.bsky.social

Also, would be cool if there were some kind of indoor space they could hang out in on grim and cold days. Not tied to any activity unless they want to. Like just some comfy sofas, maybe a pool table or something like that. Free. Yeah, would not be cheap for the council but once you offset it
