I guess “Washington leans on education to manage workforce disruption.” is easier to say than “Washington burdens educators with forcing students to become dependent on tools built to devalue or replace their labor because Congress won’t regulate AI companies.”

Sen. Adam Schiff@schiff.senate.gov

AI is reshaping industries and our economy, and it’s crucial that young people and our workforce are equipped to succeed in this landscape. Proud to introduce a bipartisan bill with Sen. Rounds to ensure students and educators have the resources they need to harness the power of AI.

"Sociology teaches that the social world—what it consists of, how it works—can be truthfully known" Helpful to be reminded that honest, effortful seeking of knowledge threatens racist delusions of grandeur. ✊

On Thursday, Florida's Board of Governors removed sociology from the general education curriculum of every university in the state. Chancellor Ray Rodrigues attacked the @asanews.bsky.social as illegitimate. On behalf of sociologists everywhere, I respond to them in today's @miamiherald.com:

I do hope journalists ask the men to explain their behavior and don’t let them hide behind a “focus on hockey” answer either. They chose to draw attention away from hockey by their actions in that locker room and by attending the State of the Union.

It bears repeating that Tom Homan is a fucking psycho and Greg Bovino's exile means functionally nothing when it comes to what's happening on the ground in Minnesota.

The Intercept@theintercept.com

In one 30-minute stretch, three legal observers were arrested — as Trump’s Border czar Tom Homan calls on locals to “end the resistance.”

If I am understanding this correctly, conservatives would have liked Bad Bunny’s halftime if it was just performed in english. Like Kendrick, or Usher, or Rhianna, etc… whose shows they laud to this day.

Predicting that this week we’ll hear more conciliatory words from the Administration regarding Minnesota (since they’re starting to realize that ICE has become politically toxic) but everyone outside of Minnesota needs to know that nothing on the ground has changed.

They will always deflect responsibility while, at the same time, saying personal responsibility is a core value of theirs. My hope is that as they back down, the general public remembers that they didn’t have to do any of this to begin with and could have stopped at any point.

I am. But there are three things at play here regarding ICE collecting private data. Quick rundown on the issue, why you should be paying attention, and what I'm doing about it:

Tressie McMillan Cottom@tressiemcphd.bsky.social

So which politician is calling for the dismantling of the probably illegal database that ice & this government is collecting biometric data of protesters?

Will probably reassign themselves to a state that won’t send them back to Minnesota for what will hopefully be a thorough investigation and potential prosecution.

You could actually structure your moral code around the idea that law enforcement doesn't exist to execute people. You don't have to create perfect victim narratives, you can just refuse to accept that the state gets to kill people.

One thing that irks me: people keep calling the folks on the streets in Minneapolis protestors. They are not generally there to protest, they are there to observe and document. This is the product of organizing and mutual aid. It is telling that these acts of citizenship are seen as protest!

For @msnownews.bsky.social, I wrote an article about how ICE Watch is grounded in sociological theories of violence prevention. The reality is that most men will only commit public violence in extremely specific scenarios and ICE Watch disrupts the conditions necessary for escalation.

ms.nowOpinion | I'm a Minneapolis sociologist who studies violence. Here's how ICE observers are helping.Research into how violence occurs shows that disapproval from the people around you can help reduce it.

I hope the admin’s supporters who are currently expressing dismay are not fooled by any attempt to “soften” the brutal, selfish, authoritarian approach to what is difficult to even call governance. This is not a failure of optics.

Axios@axios.com

NEW: As the chaotic scenes from Minnesota play out around the clock, Axios has learned that some Trump advisers quietly are talking about "recalibrating" the White House's approach. Trump's team recently reviewed private GOP polling that showed support for his immigration policies falling.

Excellent article. I hope cases like this continue to be framed as more than just a free speech/academic freedom issue because bans like this restrict student’s ability to learn; it is as much about limiting what people can know as much as they teachers can present.

Nobody working for or with this administration should ever hold any position of power again at any level. The lowest possible service position is too high for them. Anything they’ve received during their time should be taken back and given to those in the communities they are terrorizing.

really cannot be emphasized enough that bari weiss has literally never done journalism. i don’t mean that in the pejorative sense. i mean that in the “has never performed the job she was hired to do” sense

Alex Shephard@alexshephard.bsky.social

One explanation for Bari killing the story is that she did so as a public act of fealty to the administration. But another is that, as an inexperienced journalist, she doesn’t understand that a refusal to go on the record is a kind of comment in and of itself

FIFA will soon announce Bari Weiss winning their inaugural Free Speech award.

Ezra Klein is so emblematic of a certain kind of man in media. Incurious while thinking he's open-minded, condescending while ignorant of his of ignorance. It's an intellectual exercise for him, as if that's a marker of his journalistic professionalism rather than an expression of his privilege.

I try to extend empathy as much as possible, but I cannot fathom living as ignorant and afraid as folks like Ronny Jackson. Being a scapegoating bigot must be exhausting.
