Sophistry is bad and that’s what “debate” encourages. Dialogue between interlocutors who disagree but who are mutually motivated by a sincere desire for truth is one of the best things humans can do, but you can’t plan that or turn it into a public performance without ruining it.

The fetishisation of "debate" as some sort of grand public good that everyone should do is so thoughtless and jarring to me because the more you actually do it the more it becomes apparent that genuinely constructive debate is actually a pretty niche thing.

Really hoping this is a mashup with Springsteen's "Atlantic City"

First look at Dwayne Johnson as the Chicken Man in Benny Safdie's ‘LIZARD MUSIC’. The film follows a young boy who finds a secret late-night broadcast of lizards playing otherworldly music that opens a hidden door to the whimsical Chicken Man.

If I'm ever in the airport and Billy Bob Thornton starts talking to me about T-Mobile, I'm going to interrupt him and ask him to use the Sling Blade voice to say "French fried potatoes"

Steve Pearce spent decades trying to sell off our federal lands, saying “we do not even need” most of them. Jim Risch voted to put him in charge anyway. Idaho’s public lands aren’t for sale, and they aren’t Risch’s to give away. Not one acre sold on my watch. Public lands in public hands.

When I first transitioned to teaching, I went through the teaching fellows—it was a great opportunity and is why I am where I am now. But it also came draped in a lot of reform rhetoric, including a conviction that teaching could be fixed by some silver bullet. I took a class w Tim Lisante early,

Johnson indicated that he wouldn’t take any responsibility for his party losing to Democrats. Instead, he said he’d blame messaging issues or the media for giving voters the wrong idea about what both parties stood for.

Agree. I cut back on listening to podcasts a few years ago because I realized I prefer listening to books. A good nonfiction book provides depth that podcasts generally do not. And exceptional podcasts do things books cannot do. The genres are responses to different exigencies.

Anti-Prime Day starts…NOW! 🥳 Today through midnight on 10/7, enjoy free shipping site-wide, all while supporting local, independent bookstores.

I try not to be a doomer about the future, but sometimes I think about what a just world requires of an electorate (especially in the US) and then I get really bummed out.

the brazil thing is so depressing because they did the right thing, man they did what we couldn’t, they actually prosecuted their coup and threw bolsonaro’s ass in jail and generally showed the united states what a functional state looks like and now they are gonna elect his dipshit son? really?

Almost hope my Phillies somehow manage to miss the playoffs because it will be more memorable than losing a wildcard series. But because the baseball postseason is like 50% luck, if they get in they could also win the world series.

two things I think are true -Man City should receive maximal punishment for their decades of bad faith and cover-up -it is mostly neither here nor there in evaluating the "fairness" of the Premier League, which is among the most unfair sports leagues in history

There are many parallels including the fact that quality is remarkably worse. Going from professional journalism to podcasts and TikTok influencers is equivalent to the quality drop as software becomes vibe coded AI slop. But when the choice is between cheap, good and fast; good usually loses.

Going to need a new greatest living American essayist. RIP to one the best writers of my lifetime. I'm teaching "the chase" next week and spent time this summer reading some of her best stuff. Go read "Total Eclipse" in honor of her. This sucks.

I did a somewhat deep dive into the recent OpenAI and Anthropic "hacks" for an upcoming interview. IMO, the AI companies are better off running with the "rogue AI" story because the real story is actually pretty embarrassing. Like making your Wi-Fi password "wifi" embarrassing. 🧵

$2 million a year would cover the salaries of approximately 40 writing instructors (paid a reasonable, but still low wage). I would love to do a John Henry v. the steam shovel experiment to see which has superior effects, whatever this initiative discovers, or 40 additional writing instructors.

Passive voice is working overtime here. Trump cut taxes and started the war in Iran which have both massively ballooned the debt. NY Times makes it seem these things randomly happened and have “undercut” his plans to reduce the debt.

Hey literary scholars! Remember fun syllabus queries on the other site back in the day? Can we try it here? The literature of extraction: a syllabus. Please and thank you.

This is true. The Morrison Beloved reading is exceptional. I like her as the voice for all her audiobooks. Two things: - the novelist Donna Tart does a pretty good reading of the Charles Portis' novel True Grit. - Richard Poe and Frank Muller readings of Cormac McCarthy novels are excellent.

Also, I think for nonfiction the author as reader is more likely to work. Novels require another level of voice skill to do the characters and narration in a way that doesn't fall into parody while increasing comprehension.

I think The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan is a champ. It's like Dylan's third or fourth best album, but such a leap forward. Others: Chutes Too Narrow Separation Sunday De La Soul is Dead The Low End Theory Everybody Knows This is Nowhere
