You can always ask yourself, “do I want to share this thought with Peter Theil directly? Would I want to ask Sam Altman this specific question? Is Elon Musk the guy I would want advising me about this issue?” If so, type it into the little box, have fun

well, you see, dna is like a code. just like natural languages are like code. just like traffic patterns are like code. how educating young people's brains is like coding. how relationships and dating is like designing code. the way the weather behaves like code. these are basically solved problems

The opportunity cost of what has been poured into LLMs would be a generation-defining tragedy even without the primary harm of LLMs existing and being used

Kevin J. Kircher@kevinjkircher.com

Funny thought experiment: Tech monopolies have spent about $1 trillion on AI development so far. How good of a chatbot could we have built for $1 trillion by just employing smart people to answer any question people might reasonably ask and collecting all the answers in a big lookup table?

Who would want to purposefully destabilize the internet at this particular moment in time? Is there anything important happening that could be hampered by comprised technical trust and degraded societal communication?

We are mad, my guy. We've been mad. sorry we have so far failed to topple a megacorporation about it. hope the air is nice up there on your high horse though

Alex Winter@alexwinter.com

Wait'll the folks who are mad at Zuck for muzzling No Kings get wind of the Rohingya genocide.

I would not notice. And then six months later I would think about how everyone around me seemed so well-spoken, creative and full of life lately

I think it's actually ok to be repelled by otherwise "cool" things when they're inextricably part of a white supremacist movement. I think thats super good and normal actually!

Alex Hern@hern.bsky.social

do think there's a danger of looking at extremely cool shit like a car driving upside down then doing a kickflip before landing, and convincing yourself it's actually lame because the guy funding it is a white supremacist

"When placed in the social and moral context that everyone involved is aware of, this thing is utterly repellent, but we need to respect it for looking like a decent mid-budget action flick" is the bizarre position here

Do you think she has an LLM extrude a 26 word tweet for her or do you think she just spends so much time on them she thinks this is what English sentences sound like

agents are online, and they’re here to stay. open protocols are the layer that lasts, so excited to see human agent interactions being prototyped on delve.town

I think OpenAI should accept some bad things happening for the sake of sophisticated recording device technology

CNN@cnn.com

OpenAI discovered a “sophisticated recording device” in one of its offices planted by an employee who has been arrested, the company said. https://cnn.it/4dDnIxJ

just a reminder the next time you consider arguing with a person who is demanding you prove AIs aren't alive: it's not your job to prove a negative. it's their job to prove the affirmative of their argument. you are arguing with a brick wall

A literal fascist propaganda rag can make a post with the lede "can you believe we're letting these piggies vote" and the brave defenders of democracy on this website will eat it right up and ask for more

Micah@rincewind.run

do not gaze too long into the mind of the median voter, lest the mind of the median voter gaze also into you

"Ban violent video games" comes around again except this time we're also banning ones where you're mean or something

I’m not so sure it’s okay to allow people to act out being abusive to even a simulation of a person. And it’s genuinely a beautiful aspect of human nature that we have to put in a bunch of mental effort *not* to form a (para)social bond with something, even if there’s no real subject there

If we were to graph the value of these programs to society, one axis would run from asbestos to radium and the other would run from Enron to the consolidation of the textile industry.

Yeah, the pretty clearly measured and sensible perspective here is basically total rejection of this technological imposition and uprooting of the legal framework that has enforced it. The boosters are frankly delirious from propaganda and groupthink, and the media is bought or full of fomo.

Evan Urquhart@evanurquhart.bsky.social

I'm increasingly frustrated that people who are anti-AI aren't being taken seriously, and taking a page out of my thoughts on why the anti-trans backlash got as far as it did I'm starting to think the anti-AI side isn't extreme enough.

I don't want to interrupt dragging this guys ass but sometimes it is worth keeping up with something you don't intrinsically care much about for the sake of socializing and the key thing about that is YOU STILL ACTUALLY HAVE TO DO IT. The whole point is having a common thing to talk about!!!

Denny Carter@dennycarter.bsky.social

the tech bro who uses AI to play fantasy football for him is being dragged online. no one has ever been quite so mad frankly.

Of all the things it's sociopathic to outsource to a probable sentence generator, basic social exchange with your friends and colleagues has to be near the top. The entire reason you do it is to show little bits of regard for one another! The effort is the entire value of the action!

Of course, it's also possible to just grow a pair and say you're not interested in fantasy football, but that would require this guy to imagine himself as a social equal like everyone else and not some sort of superman burdened by the common sheeple. Ok good we're back to dragging him, carry on

Even knowing it's bait you just want to drip-feed him tidbits from the middle school special class social skills unit. Keep it up buddy you're almost there! You're gonna grasp the basics of effective communication with another human being! Just do the exact opposite of what you're doing!

I know I KNOW this is the least bad thing about the Fully Automated War Crimes Cockference but why do they have their pants hemmed to show off their entire novelty socks all the way up the calf

Mark Chadbourn@chadbourn.bsky.social

Hegseth hosts his first Project Meridian meeting with Musk, Palmer Luckey and Newt Gingrich. They’re looking at ways to use tech to boost Hegseth’s agenda, most likely using AI for surveillance and weapons.

If Gavin Newsom is the Democratic Presidential nominee I will go to the polls, get out my phone, and shred my ballot live on TikTok

California Gov. Gavin Newsom has vetoed a bill that would have penalized people for using smart glasses to record people without their permission in changing rooms, doctor's offices and other spaces people generally consider private.

The statistical average of all communication is noise. The value of any given communication is the way in which the subjectivity of the speaker moves it away from the average. LLM text artifacts are per se valueless and by crowding out actual communication create negative value.

Jeff VanderMeer@jeffvandermeer.bsky.social

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...

The deepest harms of LLMs would remain if the computer program was (somehow) produced and used "ethically", ie without theft or environmental harm, because those deepest harms are those that come from living in a society where interaction with others is replaced by meaningless noise.

I honestly don't really care who feels this means I "believe in a homonculus" or whatever. I don't, but I also don't feel the need to contort my belief system such that I can't possibly be accused of finding something uniquely valuable in the subjectivities of other people

The computer should properly be understood as a homogenization machine. A sort of blender to turn everything into an easily digestible protein shake, or maybe more properly a dumpster that we throw all of culture into and then, with nothing else left to do, chug the rotting dumpster juice

Half the big tech oligarchs apparently can't spell their own full names and Dario Amodei looks like he almost tore the paper forming the "D" exactly like they taught him in second grade before pivoting to scribbles

Matt Novak@paleofuture.bsky.social

The White House accord on AI that was signed by all the big tech oligarchs today misspells United States as “Unites States.”

It is really underappreciated to what degree the rogue agents discourse is about prefabricating an excuse for releasing predictably unreliable and unsafe products. We don't need "AI alignment", we need enforcement of consumer protection and felony hacking laws.

I wish people who want to write articles about how college education isn’t actually that important a part of college education would demonstrate this point by quitting their jobs in college education

Damn it's almost like lack of consent is baked into the entire worldview that makes it possible to build or conceivable to use AI as we have it today

Women trying to succeed in Silicon Valley AI and effective altruist spaces are reporting feeling serious social pressure to attend sex parties - where people have reported being sexually assaulted, like below. Events like Aella’s “Slutcon,” which is happening again this weekend.
