Wasn't this the plot of the Dark Knight? Only with Batman deleting this technology at the end, right?
Homeland Security plans a no-bid contract with Nebraska’s Pen-Link for software that includes an AI assistant to help agents search billions of wiretap, phone, and location records. ICE says only one company can do the work.

I'd like to remind everyone of the principled courage of the Pentagon press, which walked out of the building their beat relies on rather than sign a loyalty oath. One of them was a dear friend for whom it was a giant sacrifice and I'm so proud of him. The White House press isn't in the same league.
Should have walked out with the Pentagon reports apnews.com/article/pent...

An important point from Dr Delawalla Yes, we all know DOD does research, including medical research (eg on malaria) But if you genuinely, hand-on-your-heart think that the 2 dudes Hegseth & Bhattacharya secretly siphoned NIH money to DOD to *BENEFIT PUBLIC HEALTH*, well, you’ve lost your compass
Also this! And, I do understand that IAA's are a thing. BUT JESUS CHRIST I NEED EVERYONE TO STOP ATTRIBUTING GOOD WILL AND LEARN THESE FUCKERS ARE NOT DOING SOMETHING THAT WILL BENEFIT THE PUBLIC. THEY ARE INTENTIONALLY DESTROYING OUR DEMOCRACY.

There are wonderful staffers (who I’m in touch with) working at HHS, doing heroic work under extremely awful anti-science, anti-public health leaders; the staffers—at CDC, NIH, FDA—are quietly doing all they can to promote public health despite HHS leaders working hard to dismantle public health
Do we have any public health officials left in HHS???
It is not clear to me why only Democrats are alarmed. Everyone gets sick.
The agreement "signed by Dr. Bhattacharya and Dr. Robert Kadlec at the Defense Department" ... "could allow the Defense Department to go around Congress and gain access to billions of dollars meant for infectious disease research" and involve ~$2 billion of NIAID's budget (!!!). 🎁

This is a must-read, brilliant, incredible report. I've read it twice already. aiandeducation.mit.edu/report/
MIT report is superb. It acknowledges disruption, concedes different disciplines will handle this differently, foregrounds people and social interaction — but also says something obvious I had just about given up hope institutions could say: aiandeducation.mit.edu/report/

This is incredible. @mayor.nyc.gov
This stopped me in my tracks. An independent study by @qmul.bsky.social has found that after ULEZ was introduced, children’s lungs grew faster in Central London and have now caught up with children outside of the capital. Incredible.
I cannot emphasize how many times similar studies have come to similar conclusions. The longer we wait, the more those numbers - dollars and lives - will go up.
“A single-payer universal health care system could cover every American, save more than 100,000 lives a year, and still cost $1 trillion less than the system it would replace, according to a new preprint study led by researchers at the Yale School of Public Health.” ysph.yale.edu/news-article...
There are a lot of things to worry about these days, but I'm surprised by how little press coverage / alarm was raised by when AI slipped the leash - or the "unexpected autonomous behavior" reported by every frontier AI model. Don't get me wrong: I welcome our new robot overlords. 1/2 - links in 2/2
This is an incredible piece of writing, which I rarely say, AND incredible scholarship (which I also almost never say).
BIG NEW piece by me. A few years ago, if you asked me to summarize my entire worldview in one article, I would’ve said it was too broad and too difficult. But this year, I decided to do it.

Finally, resilience. Low-resource settings have spent decades managing outbreaks, supply shortages and fragile health systems. Those experiences have produced practical expertise in surveillance, adaptability and crisis response that wealthier countries would be wise to value more highly.
Hugely important, and under-discussed. Every mental health professional and ER professional should be talking about this specific phenomenon, and as Dr. Basedow points out, similar phenomenon in other fields early and often. I would argue even without AI, this is an incredibly important topic.
