The gorgon girls are ugly and the gorgon girls are cruel
and they cackle when they giggle and they will not follow rules
and they break the girls that kiss them and their eyes are dark and flat
So I'm gonna be a gorgon girl and that's the end of that

A hero whose heroism consists of killing people is uninteresting to me, and I detest the hormonal war orgies of our visual media, the mechanical slaughter of endless battalions of black-clad, yellow-toothed, red-eyed demons.
This? This is all that's allowed in room B.
Not that that is allowed! That should go in room C.
And this goes in room B because that isn't this.
And room A isn't used, since it doesn't exist.
You have to be familiar enough with the genre you're writing that you don't just show up all "heh, bet you slop-eaters have never seen anything like this: [unoriginal work derivative of the most mainstream entries in the genre]" and you also have to bring in ideas from outside the genre.
One thing about the whole "you have to read books if you want to be an author" thing is that if you aim to do more than just genre inbreeding, you have to read stuff outside the genre you're writing, too. May even have to read [shudders] nonfiction.

folks always asking “where’s waldo?”
yet do they ask, “who is waldo? why is waldo? what are waldo’s hopes & dreams? how is waldo doing? when did i last check in on waldo?”
eyes peeled looking for waldo but do they do more than point & exclaim?
does anyone truly SEE waldo? 🤔
*hits weed* 💨 woaah 🤯
This is why I hate the “it has to be subtle!!!” Critique of queer media. The fact that we can’t just say what we are or what the character is is so reductive and constraining to so many queer writers. Don’t let cis people dictate how you show you identity. They don’t know what they’re saying.
When trans creators are subtle, people dismiss the trans subtext as “headcanon.”
When trans creators are loud and proud, people call it “obnoxious” and “cringe.”
They just don’t want us to be represented in media at all. Because they don’t want us to exist at all.
I was fortunate enough to meet Walter Koenig many years ago. I asked him to sign a picture of Alfred Bester, his character in Babylon 5. As I handed over the photo I said "I never thought of him as a Bad Guy."
He gave me the most brilliant smile.
My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today.
Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

Right. You could of course vote Republican and assure your rights are stripped. Or stay at home and somehow rationalize that your rights are more important than those of the 240 million who did not vote for Trump and the destruction of our democracy. Or vote democrat and have people who listen.
i’m at 240/330 with a bit under 24hrs until i leave for my trip - anyone wanna chip in to help me close the last 90$ gap so i can have the relief of checking that off my “need to do to get ready” list? 🥺🫶

Grotesque
She is crouched catlike at the corner of the building, broken at the neck. Scaled and clawed, faceless, a grimace implied; she might be scowling at the stained stonework or the crumbling facades.
I love how much you love them, he says. Rubs his thumb over the scar on my knuckle.
The whole thing is built around this: people like to talk. People like to tell stories and listen to stories, and listen to big ideas and come up with big ideas, and to communicate with each other about what they liked.
If there's nobody on one end of the idea it isn't communication. It's nothing.
People like to communicate. They don't like nothing. So the only hope the publisher has to make this work is to get so many people to read the nothing book they can talk amongst themselves!
This is why so many people refuse to read the nothing books. We can talk fine on our own.
There are even people who make a business out of publishing these stories and big ideas- they make a lot of copies and sell the copies. They pay the first person for the story or the big idea all written down. It's still communication! People like to communicate. Look at them go!
If you forget people like to communicate, and you are the publisher, you might go gosh I wish I could pay someone with a big book machine a lot less than I'm paying the writers who write books. I could just push a machine and a book would come out and I could sell it!
But this isn't communication.
Sometimes people will even write down a long story or a big idea. Other people sometimes pay them to read the story or the idea, because people like to communicate. They like stories and they like big ideas.
