The new British Airways app has finally landed on my phone after what feels like two years of "coming soon". First impressions: it's genuinely good. But there's one change that's going to annoy points people. A thread 🧡

You can still book with Avios - nothing's stopping you. It just all happens in a browser now rather than natively in the app. For those of us who treat reward-seat hunting as half the fun, it's a small but real loss.

The on-the-day stuff is the bit most people actually need, and it's now done properly. Gate status, seat, boarding group all front and centre. This is the app the old one should always have been.

Here's my gripe though. Go into Reward Flights and you get two options: "Reward Flight finder" and "Book with Avios". That's it. And tapping "Book with Avios" just kicks you straight out to the BA website. No more quick in-app reward seat hunt.

Credit where it's due - as travel-day software this is a massive step up on the old app. Live boarding passes, gate countdowns, push updates in the 24 hours before you fly. BA say it's "built to evolve" too, so more to come.

BA quietly made China Southern a full Avios redemption partner and almost nobody's talking about it. The interesting bit isn't the long-haul. It's the cheap stuff πŸ‘‡

Don't get too excited about business class though. It's bookable, but they tightened the seats they release to BA the moment J inventory went live. It's thin. Economy short-haul is the play here. I wouldn't build a trip chasing a business seat.

China Southern's real strength is its domestic + regional network out of Guangzhou. Short hops = tiny Avios cost + low taxes: β†’ Guangzhou-Sanya: 4,000 Avios β†’ Guangzhou-Ho Chi Minh: 6,500 β†’ Guangzhou-Beijing: 8,500 That's the kind of redemption I actually love.

Genuinely one of the easier 30% Avios bonuses to act on this month if you've got Capital on Tap points sitting around. Qatar Privilege Club is running it 1-30 June, and CoT is a named partner. A few honest thoughts as someone with two CoT cards in the stack.

So my actual plan: only moving points I've got a near-term redemption for, doing it this week not on the 30th, and checking seat availability BEFORE transferring. No point bonusing your way to a balance for seats that don't exist.

What actually surprised me is the free card maths. CoT free transfers at 0.8 Avios/point normally - below the Pro card's 1:1. With the 30% bonus the free card lands around 1.04/point. It briefly beats what Pro people get at standard rate. Wild for a free card.

And before anyone says it - yes, Qatar's programme is great. I rate it. Often better than BA on long-haul Business and QSuite availability on their own metal is solid. I just don't move big balances anywhere without a trip in mind. That's not caution, that's just sense.

The bit nobody seems to mention loudly enough: the 30% is paid by QATAR, not at the point of transfer. It lands separately by 31 July. So when you transfer and the bonus isn't there instantly - that's normal. Don't fire off a support ticket like I nearly did the first time.

And it's NOT retroactive. The Avios have to actually land in your Qatar account before 30 June, not just be kicked off before then. I'd never leave a multi-step transfer to the last 48 hours. Do it early and save yourself the stress.

BA has just launched new Avios-Only flights to Reykjavik and Tenerife for October half-term ✈️ Every seat, every cabin, bookable with Avios. From £5 + 33,500 Avios return. Really tempting for half-term - but I'd do the maths before you get carried away.

My honest take: if you're flexible on dates, check standard Reward Seats either side first - you might pay fewer Avios for the same trip. But if half-term is fixed and you've a voucher spare, Reykjavik for the Northern Lights is a lovely way to spend it.

What you're really paying for is guaranteed availability - a whole plane of reward seats on a week when standard space would have gone months ago. That's genuinely useful if half-term is locked in. Just don't go in thinking it's a bargain, because it isn't quite.

The thing that properly tips it for me is the Companion Voucher. It works on these flights β†’ second seat for just the taxes, or 50% off the Avios if you're solo. For a family that basically halves the points, and suddenly the maths is brilliant.

Here's the bit that's easy to miss: 33,500 Avios return is actually a little more than a standard short-haul Reward Seat to either place normally costs (~27,500-30,500 at peak). The Β£5 makes it feel like a steal. The Avios number is the real price.
