We’re getting hammered up here, rain and wind all night, wind seems to be worse this morning, though so far only one bird box and a small willow blown down. Our garden is pretty sheltered, though if you look at the large oak and willow on the left you can just see how strong it is.

So I found out last week that this happened, which is very heartwarming - largely for my monthly columns this year in Gardens Illustrated magazine covering various societal, wildlife and climate issues related to gardening

This death toll should be treated as the national scandal it is. An estimated 4,354 people have died in UK heatwaves since June. The Government has yet to explain how, or what it will do to be ready before next summer.

Over May and June, 2,877 people died in the UK due to extreme heat. Today Labour has approved new gas drilling in the North Sea to please Donald Trump and Shell. Now we know whose side Labour is on.

You might like to remember this next time you hear someone claiming that net-zero is driving up bills

Simon Evans@drsimevans.carbonbrief.org

NEW ANALYSIS: Expensive gas behind "nearly 90%" of rise in UK household electricity bills since 2020 + 77% of the rise in gas bills Contrary to what you've seen in media / political narratives, net-zero is "helping to shelter Britain from the impact of expensive gas", says @acjsissons.bsky.social

Northern Rail is terrible, if the no of carriages aren't too few, everything falls apart with delays affecting other trains. I left over an hour spare for delays and I'm still going to arrive 30 min late for a 1hr lecture. A ticket refund doesn't even begin to compensate for my lost time and impact.

Breaking: we're losing nature faster than ever before. But it’s not too late to change course. The solutions exist. Now we need meaningful action from leaders to turn things around.

I often see people argue that clean energy is not reducing emissions, because it just adds to rather than replaces fossil fuels. This argument is deeply misguided – clean energy built since 2005 has displaced 23 billion tons. I dive in over at The Climate Brink:

theclimatebrink.comWhat if the world hadn't built wind and solar?Clean energy does not simply “add to” global energy use; it displaces fossil sources that would otherwise get built.

Here in Calderdale we had 40% less rain than average in the summer months and temperatures were higher than average. While we weren’t in drought like the south, the soil did eventually dry out.
