#HorrorWritersChat Q4: The poison takes our fur so we embrace the cold. Dig down further, outlast them. Tails fall off, eyes dull. Ignore pain, supplant the mole. Our children forget the sun, the taste of cheese. But the noise dies. They fall like leaves. Mourn what we were, forget the dead.

Alexander Hay@alexanderhay.myatproto.social

Every story has an ending, but horror doesn't always have happy ones. Q4: What sort of very short (mouse-sized?) story can you write which has a sting in the tale? #HorrorWritersChat

#HorrorWritersChat Q3: I use a ton of monsters, but my favorite sort defy something the character feels should be true. Confirming something they fear, or denying a belief they hold. It doesn't have to be a one-to-one mirror, but I like these story levels to resonate. Cats like to play.

Alexander Hay@alexanderhay.myatproto.social

Right, you 'orrible little (James) Herberts. El Gato de Ulthar is hot on your furry little heels, and you're lunch if they get you. Are you a Mrs. Frisby, a Matthias or just plain taking the Mickey? Q3: What do you define as a monster in your horror, and how do you make it work? #HorrorWritersChat

Jacob Marsh - Author πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ reposted

All of the above. But detail and dialogue are my strong suits. Comedy too. I got a story in my collection about a dude who's a porch pirate and while what happens at times is scary, at one point the 'thing' terrorizing him rams a pen in his bunghole while he's looking for it, so.. #HorrorWritersChat

What is a human world to a little mouse but horror? Q2: How do you make your horror stories horrible? Is it detail, emotion, pathos, fear or even comedy? Or something else? How do YOU make the punters quiver? #HorrorWritersChat

#HorrorWritersChat Q2: I like horror that seeps in, a concept or truth behind the monstrous thing the characters have to defeat. So I like to start there and work out, usually toward something sad and real. Example: Vampires are scary: insatiable hunger, ect. But mortality is what I focus on.

#HorrorWritersChat Q4 I'd have our characters be civilians stuck in a conflict between two forces. The conflict is over something that isn't the safety of the civilian population. Then I would slowly introduce the third force, a kaiju-style threat. Something looming over the horizon. Inescapable.

A shudder jolts through your body. You look at him. His last tears roll down his muddy cheeks. He is dead. Take your answers to questions 2 & 3, and pitch us a horror story about a war from a perspective you would consider the most frightening! #HorrorWritersChat

#HorrorWritersChat Q3 I would keep the people and the affects completely realistic. I'd want to make sure the human impact is felt, but then make the conflict itself completely fictional and as ungrounded as I can without pulling attention away from the emotions of the piece.

Gree_@greethewriter.bsky.social

His cries are smothered by explosions and screams. You're just an assistant. Your eyes dart for the doctor. Where is she? How- War permeates between horror genres. What of it would you make supernatural? Or would you keep it grounded in reality? #HorrorWritersChat

#HorrorWritersChat Q2: It's tough, because I'd want to be respectful to real-life PTSD. So I'd probably pick a supernatural antagonist to symbolize and process the trauma through. I think I'd be less likely to mess that up than the specifics of treatment and symptoms, etc.

Gree_@greethewriter.bsky.social

His shivering, tear-dimmed eyes stare at you. At that red cross plastered over your chest. You can't breathe. He's your first. Wars scar soldiers' souls forever. How would you explore that in a psychological horror about war? The loss of self, the flashbacks, or something else? #HorrorWritersChat
