anthropic's exploding lol it went public, we find out the company's debts are like $650 billion dollars. It's valuation was based on like a ton of IOUs. a week ago those IOU holders were selling them off. in china right now, the bubble is very much popping and $450 billion vanished overnight. hm

Huh, this is not what I expected. But I like it

New from me: The US has faced a higher cost than any other country from the global Hormuz oil shock, with the crisis adding $160 billion to its fuel bill — or $471 per person on average — despite being the world’s largest oil producer.

That is insane. If only there was another way to save a literal mountain of money, something they invest heavily in but which is deeply unprofitable

I wonder why Google felt a need to lie about this. Very serious people are always telling me that the water issue is overblown so surely Google would have nothing to hide? 🤔

Daniel Aldrich@danielaldrich.bsky.social

Google was really trying to hide its water use figures, to the degree that it got the council to try to keep its water use figures secret. The community finally got the actual numbers and found out Google was using 29 percent of the water in the community. www.wired.com/story/what-t...

What's striking to me are the rules of engagement and the methodology of action here, which more or less is predicated on burying liberal delusions about "debate" or the "marketplace of ideas". The rules were ultimately very simple: amplify your own message and suppress your opponent's.

I don't know that there is a template or a "secret sauce" or a clear-cut lesson to take from this. But if there is one it's the idea of treating social media as the hostile territory that it is, of actually acting like you are a participant in propaganda warfare and not like a consumer.

I live in a downtown area of São Paulo so I see every march and every protest up close and they had more people on Avenida Paulista two weeks ago than I have ever seen. And then they did that again yesterday. *Right now,* spontaneously, just celebrating, there's a huge crowd.

I did this thread 10 days ago. With 10% reporting Lula is up by less than 1%. Gonna be a long night. Whatever happens, this election is mired by widespread fraud by Bolsonaro loyalists

So i think there’s a chance that Lula does the impossible and wins the runoff

It's a almost too on the nose that in the midst of a fascist takeover, we've got Obama criticizing Trump for what he has done to tone and decorum and what the White House *looks* like. And Liberals are loving it, of course. Finally someone says it how it is!

Anti-trans Democrats are spreading poison when we can least afford it, during elections in this ongoing fascist takeover. As a strategy, it’s a recipe for failure. As a moral stand, it’s reprehensible. PS I’m the father of young trans woman and I’ll never forgive anyone who makes her life harder.

You can't clean up plastic once it's in the ocean You can't suck up fossil carbon once it's in the atmosphere You can't (quickly) regrow a forest once you've destroyed it Destruction needs to be addressed at source. It makes no sense to just damage everything and try to fix it afterwards

Presumably all the "Palestinians deserve to suffer because Hamas are terrorists and if only they tried to kill soldiers instead it would be legitimate resistance" people are on the Palestinians' side here. Right?

what gets me about the current surge in resistance to climate policy is it has never been more obviously necessary, cheap, or easy. half this stuff is on the shelf!!

David Roberts@volts.wtf

Not just the fastest, or the cheapest, or the best, but the *only* possible solution to climate change is a rapid global buildout of clean energy infrastructure. If you're standing in the way of that, you're not working on climate change & should be honest with yourself about your priorities.

BIG jump in China's exports of solar in September, far above any earlier month, except the export-tax-driven wave in March. Solar kit with annual power output equal to 10 large nuclear reactors exported in just one month. Media reporting wildly off as they used wrong metrics!

I'm not kidding, the guy simply has to be at the very least deported at the end of this. If we're doing "he's not from here" shit, he is the most not from here guy alive. He needs jail or deportation the second it's viable to do it.
