For more background on the conflict between Nithya Raman and national DSA leadership, check out this 🧵 bsky.app/profile/pete...

Peter Sterne@petersterne.com

The key context to have is that Nithya was really bad on Palestine for a while. She distanced herself from DSA when they called for a ceasefire right after Oct. 7, focused on the hostages while ignoring the genocide, opposed BDS, sought an endorsement from a local pro-Israel group, etc.

Just a reminder that there is no good data to support these uses in K12, we are just testing it live all on kids who won’t ever be these ages again and can’t get them back if we fuck it up.

"AI can draft an essay for you, especially if you give it a high quality prompt." Really? This is what MIT thinks high schoolers should learn? MIT's "Day of AI" dayofai.org provides materials for K-12 teachers and claims to have reached over 5,000,000 students to date. 1/2

I don’t expect a Theranos whistleblower to be an expert in nonfiction cinema any more than I am in medical testing, but John Grierson defined documentary a century ago as “the creative treatment of actuality” and that’s still a good place to start

This isn't hyperbole or a joke. Parents actually called the cops and got the black boy and his family removed and the league claimed they were trespassing because he was "putting on a show" and wasn't playing "fair."

They called the cops on this 3-year-old Black boy because he was kickin the white kids' ass on the soccer field.

my favorite movie from 2023. and todd haynes does incredible commentary (the FAR FROM HEAVEN commentary is top tier.)

Hoping Criterion gives this one a disc one day, they've done Netflix titles before, and this one deserves better than to be semi-forgotten next to a Enola Holmes movie.

Brad Lander is such a real one

I’ve been released from IDF custody with a “warning,” apparently because of my public profile (I told them I wasn’t even a congressmember yet, just a nominee). But several dozen rabbis & participants harvesting olives with me are still in detention.

watched THE DEVILS (restored version) in 35mm @filmlinc.bsky.social and it absolutely blew me away. of course it's turned up to 11 and completely insane, but it's also a sad and profound film. and it's one of the few films about religious faith that totally works even if you're not at all religious.

if Zohran Mamdani used the word "Shylock" the ADL would have called in a nuclear strike on New York City by now

Prem Thakker ツ@premthakker.bsky.social

The ADL finally chimes in… with one very short post: "The term 'Shylock' is rooted in a longstanding antisemitic stereotype. Regardless of intent, its use can reinforce harmful tropes about Jews and normalize language that has long been used to target the Jewish community."

We all know the "Viggo broke his toe" story but what's another movie fact you're personally compelled to bring up every time without prompting? For me, it's the fact that Robin Tunney is wearing a wig in The Craft because of having just shaved her head to save her job filming Empire Records.

all of this and also shame on the asian-american parents and students bringing this suit and furthering the project of white supremacy.

jamelle@jamellebouie.net

“merit” means elite or selective institutions are mostly white with some number of east asians permitted and at most a smattering of anyone else.

I tend to agree with this but it's worth asking why this shouldn't extend to cases where secessionist groups claim a mandate of ethnicity or incipient nationhood (I think it should).

I think people should ask Ds running for office how they plan to vote on these bills (there's also a pro-bail bill floating around). You can say "abolish ICE" but what will you do? Will you vote for DHS to create new crime centers for shoplifting and then feign ignorance?

Jessica Pishko@jesspish.bsky.social

It's hard to get attention when people are focused on the midterms, but politics will continue after November. On the horizon: a federal bill addressing "organized retail crime" and another addressing "carjacking." Both of these would be disasters and give DHS more power.

And just to pre-empt the inevitable comment: Did the removal of lead play a role? Surely. Is lead "the" explanation? No. I describe myself as a Lead Episcopalian, not a Lead Evangelical: I believe in the lead hypo, sure, but, like, calmly, and just on Sundays. It's not all-consuming.*

I do feel like one of the biggest underappreciated crime victories we've had is that since its peak in 1991, total official property crime has fallen by 60%. Not the rate. The total amount. As populations grew. The rate of property crime is down over 70% from 1991 to 2025.
