A day late, but this is one of the first images taken of Earth from space. Ever. It was acquired from an altitude of 105 km (five times higher than the previous record) eighty years ago, on 24 October 1946, with a 35 mm camera mounted on a V-2 rocket launched from the White Sands Missile Range.

Congratulations, Wendy! So well deserved. πŸ˜€πŸ₯³β€οΈ

Astronomer Ptolemy called it "a nebula following the sting of Scorpius" in 130 AD. Messier catalogued it in 1764. But Giovanni Battista Hodierna had already seen it before 1654 (counting 30 stars) and Lacaille described it as a square of 15–20 stars in 1752. πŸ”πŸ§ͺβš›οΈ #astronomy

Bluesky is where I get all my good book recommendations. I have read a larger variety (and frankly, quantity!) of books in the past 3 years being on here than I had in a long, looong time beforehand. Thanks, Bluesky book readers, for sharing what you love with such enthusiasm!

There’s details in this that are notable, but overall absolutely amazing. I imagine most of us will eventually know someone who’s life was saved because of this. Star Trek level technology here.

I have received two (2) spontaneous compliments on papers I've written and you had better believe those are in the 'feel good folder' for when I need them! Go tell someone what you like about their work! No-one tells them!

Where do I get my ideas? Um...I futz around until something works? I ask housefolk for their opinions and listen to their suggestions? I recognize that I often don't see the world as others do? I admire Henry Matisse? #papercraft
