Joining the EU has been a magic ticket to prosperity for former Russian satellite states. Bulgaria is now going vertical. This will happen for Ukraine, and it's Putin's nightmare. Ukraine’s resources, size, brainpower and location assure it will make even Poland's success small on comparison.

It’s fascinating comparing the front page coverage of the Huntingdon train attack (below) with how the British press treated another case 30 years ago. I’m referring to the 1995 Netto supermarket attack in Birmingham in which a man stabbed 10 people, killing one of them.

Grear idea. But leave at least some of the extra cash with local councils.

Nothing but positivity for this idea "Rachel Reeves plans Budget tax raid on expensive homes" on.ft.com/4hGi275 Progressive. Better than a transactions tax, doesn't gum up the market. Encourages downsizing. Raises useful cash. Even Osborne likes it. Looking forward to paying it...

New YouGov polling. That’s a peak for the Greens. Amazing how a good communicator with vision can turn around a party’s fortunes. RFM: 27% (+1) LAB: 17% (-3) CON: 17% (=) GRN: 16% (+1) LDM: 15% (=) Also Labour’s lowest in a YouGov poll.

Scale of Plaid win in Caerphilly is significant, not least because of what it says about the potential for progressive tactical voting in (relatively) high turnout elections to block Reform. Voters in this race knew it was a Plaid-Reform contest and voted accordingly.

Nelson's Victory crew included a Brazilian and a Russian, 2 Indians, 2 Swiss, 2 Portuguese, 3 Danes and 3 Norwegian sailors. There were 3 Germans, 4 Italians, 6 Swedes, 7 Dutchmen, 9 West Indians and an African, as well as 21 Americans, 63 Irish, 64 Scots, 441 English.... oh, and 3 French men, too.

It's not news. It's designed to make headlines. Ignoring it is a definite editorial decision and I'd say it's right.

I’ve got a lot more accepting of left wing analysis of the media that I previously thought was a bit paranoid or overdone.

This is a grim read. I stick to my view that the wilful blindness of the government to the financial crisis in local government will cost them their majority at the next election. Why not roll the dice for change when the local public realm is falling apart? www.theguardian.com/society/2025...

They're right, obvs. The tax system is an insane byzantine riddle, Labour's polling is at the earth's core, tax rises are inevitable, the government is aimless, & growth is being harmed by the need for perpetual mini tax hikes. Might as well do something daring which history will recognise you for.

Great way to use up NHS resources.

The Liberal Democrats are set to win more seats than the Conservatives due to the electoral system, if polling stays the same, polling expert Sir John Curtice has said. www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/poli...
