I cry when computers do precisely what I asked them to instead of what I wanted

When I received a chat message on BlueSky in March, it said I'd have to verify that I'm an adult by sending my id to some provider to use chat. Clicked it again now and I can see the chat message. I haven't verified I'm an adult. Are they letting babies chat now or did they get my id another way?

The ASL interpreter is the unsung hero of this video. It's been a few decades since I've signed (my childhood best friend's mom was deaf), but she is Luthering for Brandon Johnson here. It's incredible.

Mayor Johnson: There are those in this country that have decided, at the behest of this president, to declare war on Chicago and American cities across this country. They have clearly decided that they want a rematch of the Civil War. We will not submit to the authoritarianism that is coming down.

"There's a reason you separate military and the police. One fights the enemies of the state, the other serves and protects the people. When the military becomes both, then the enemies of the state tend to become the people." Cautionary tale from 2 decades ago.

With a heavy heart, I have to remind everyone that Kubernetes v1.30 Uwubernetes is now EOL. If you are still running on v1.30, please upgrade your clusters uwu 👉👈😔

They're being commissioned as Lieutenant Colonels. An LTC is usually a battalion commander, brigade XO, or a staff officer under a General. That's a lot of military authority/influence for people with zero military training. I'd say this is unprecedented, except there is precedent and it was bad.

The more people talk about ATProto (Bluesky) vs ActivityPub (Mastodon, Pixelfed, et al), the more I think identity in a social graph is such a narrow slice of the problem.

One challenge is migrating your identity to a new domain (or identity-provider subdomain if you're not hosting your own). You have to convince the services that authenticated you through your old domain that your new domain is your new canonical identity.

Part of the challenge with that is that there needs to be some way to ensure that someone else isn't trying to impersonate you on a new domain by pretending you migrated there.

I'm thinking of a cross between DIDs (what ATProto uses) and OIDC (which is like OAuth2 but slightly better). I want people to be able to paste in their domain, or subdomain of another provider, which then does like a 3-legged OAuth flow, and everything else is handled by the apps.

Noah was easily one of the kindest people I've ever met. It's always hard to hear news like this, but especially about someone like him. I'm glad I got to spend time with him along the way.

Literally all of these are delicious. I legitimately do not understand why anyone thinks otherwise.

You can only eat one for the rest of your life, which one you picking?

Something I almost posted in a PR today and later realized I should have: Someone will inevitably feel the urge to follow the internet tradition of offering unsolicited advice that they think will be helpful for my use case, so I'll just head that off by assuring those folks: I know.

When I was in the army, we had a joke "being Airborne means never passing on an opportunity to let everyone around you know you're better than they are". I notice that same smug sense of superiority a lot in the Rust community.

Brian Holt@brianholt.me

"It's written in Rust" is not a feature of your app. "It's blazing fast" is a hollow claim that makes me doubt it. Please stop putting these things on your homepage. Please show me why your tool/app/whatever makes my work easier/cheaper/faster-to-iterate.

That's not strictly true. I picked up a lot of other skills along the way. Software pays better than nearly all of them, though. I think one or two aspects of my military training pay better, though probably not legally. Or morally.

Still trying to learn how ATProto works at various levels. One way I learn things deeply is by implementing them myself. Is there a good way to test integration between Bluesky and a custom PDS?

Like, I can see that I need to implement various xrpc endpoints, but how do I know if I've done that correctly? With ActivityPub, I can just interact with the server from my Mastodon account or vice versa. Does ATProto have an equivalent? Do I have to register with a relay?

I suppose what I'm looking for is a minimum viable implementation — whatever that looks like. From there I can tinker with it to understand it more.
