I am old enough to remember when politicians felt the need to hide behind euphemism and obfuscation. As frustrating as these obfuscations were I hope it is becoming clear to all that they were an advance, historically speaking

I do not feel the need to engage with this argument morally because, as a political strategy, "impose Democratic Centralism on everyone left-of-center" is about as viable as "achieve true communism in our time".

A helpfully clear exchange here Hasan: "So your argument is that [Minnesota ICE protesters] should stay at home because immigration is a salient issue for Donald Trump. Opposing ICE is only going to help Trump. Wait until we win the election in 2028." Yglesias: "Yes that is what I would have said"

The closest I’ve come to death in Minneapolis was a right-on-red driver turning into me on the two-way at Stinson & East Hennepin. My bike hit her front quarter-panel and I barrel-rolled over her windshield. I was lucky with only a concussion. This directive can’t be acted upon fast enough.

Wedge LIVE!™@wedge.live

Today the Minneapolis City Council's Climate & Infrastructure Committee will be discussing the city's 2-way bikeways and conflicts with right turning vehicles at signalized intersections. Most of these intersections don't have signage prohibiting a right turn through a red light.

The Safe Bay program in Duluth has exceeded even proponents’ expectations, and haters—residential and business—have come to support it. This year alone, it’s helped connect 25+ families/households to permanent housing. If Duluth can do this, Mpls can do it. Also Elizabeth Shaffer SUCKS

MPR News@mprnews.org

Minneapolis City Council members on Tuesday pushed forward on their plan to let unsheltered people sleep overnight in their cars at designated parking lots. If approved by the full city council next week, the ordinance would take effect in January.

There is a political coalition absolutely speedrunning the return to the status quo of racist policing and harmful punishment-first prosecution. Plumping the police ranks & ++pay without changing racist, unaccountable policing. Anders Folk. Metro gang task force (again). Racializing crime memes.

This is the path that took this country from Rodney King back to Ferguson. Disavow “defund” all you want but this city/country is headed back into naked oppression and another decade (or two) until crisis and riots. It’s so fucking sad & enraging & predictable. A reminder to be in for the long haul

The north star, imo, is people need more care. We have people in neighborhoods in this city just really hurting. Absorbing the brunt of racialized segregation & disinvestment. Effectively sacrifice zones. Of course people want more protection and stability. And we can’t change the pattern w/o them.

Remember this tweet? This is Roper from the Strib. He had already written his column on car window smashing when he met with us (at our request hours before his deadline). He’s just written another column bashing me for, among other things, being “academic” and he still doesn’t understand the data.

marymoriarty.bsky.social@marymoriarty.bsky.social

All he had from police were anecdotes unsupported by evidence, all of which were refuted by our data, emails, etc.. His response, “I feel like I’m in the middle.” What happened to reporting? Hard(?) questions to police like, “What evidence do you have to support this?

God, every time I see the words "Sheriff Bob Fletcher" in rapid succession I feel like I'm in a damn time machine. Fletcher was one of the rightwingers behind the 1991 attempt to repeal an ordinance that granted LGBTQ people rights in St. Paul. It failed by over 4,000 votes.

I have refused to use the term “Somali gangs” despite tremendous pressure. Why? It’s a political narrative, not an accurate descriptor of gun violence, even if it was committed by a Somali youth. Who is driving this narrative? Republicans, the Strib, and police. Brilliant reporting below.

Spoilers for Lanterns, a show that IMO you shouldn’t bother watching anyway Aaron Pierre is good, and without him this show would be *utterly* unwatchable. Waaaay over-convoluted plot, too many one dimensional characters, way too much Kyle Chandler doing the exact same schtick But the worst…

Like the literal ending is: gee this kid is programmed to murder the world, but if I don’t believe in his redemption through motherhood and Nebraska football, then I’m not living my values. But his mother has been lying her ass off the whole show and the kid *just* hatched an evil plot. Ok

They bring in the real world Nebraska football coach to cameo and bless this kid. In a show with a Black protagonist that is also trying to same something about race and exceptionalism, it’s very very weird and confused.

And the show has him drop a third of a million to pay off some other random white teen who blackmails him ... because … he feels guilt for playing a role in this town that always hated him getting fucked up? He wasn’t running the operation! Chandler’s Lantern fucked it up by playing cowboy!

For my money, that show ended up being a New York Times “real Americans in a diner” column turned into a superhero show. GTFO with all of that. Everybody in that town was in on a fucked up militia conspiracy, headed by mama genocidal alien killing machine. Why are we redeeming these people? IDGAF!!!

That ending! Pierre’s character has to invest his entire sense of morality into trusting and believing in a white teen star quarterback - who is a literal genocidal alien killing machine & son of a sheriff from a rural town full of assholes - because… those are good folk who must be redeemed? Why???

This is what the Hennepin side of block E looked like in 1969 vs the exact spot today. I don't think it's hyperbole to say this is an abject failure of urban renewal. Like today's Nicollet Mall, we keep designing these dehumanizing places, then get baffled why people don't want to to there.
