I see a direct line from roughing up the 80-year-old man in Wolfville to evicting Joan Baxter and Jennifer Henderson from the EverWind announcement to vilifying Paul Wonzey. It's all about delegitimizing dissent.

The Nova Scotia NDP scolding MLA Paul Wozney just seems like a perfect example of the "be kind" tropes we see all the time. I always say when people say "be kind" what they really mean is "be quiet." The Nova Scotia NDP want us to "be kind/quiet." Taking to the streets is not violence.

/2 Premier Houston and his band of anti-environment and anti-climate rogues have made it even worse. In Nova Scotia; we’re now doing “One project, NO review.” And there will be no environmental assessment at all for the hyperscale data centre EverWind is proposing to build in the province.

You can read the text of the Mark Carney's bill C-39 online at www.parl.ca/DocumentView... Anyone doing so will notice, even if digging no deeper than the summary, that the bill gives specific officials unilateral power over project approvals instead of a credible impact assessment process. 🧵1/

It’s hard enough for cities in Canada to do smarter things given how often bad city leaders hurt their own cities. But it’s extra infuriating watching awful provincial premiers sabotaging cities by ripping out good things they FINALLY managed to achieve. Premiers should not have that power, period.

Brent Toderian@brenttoderian.bsky.social

"Ripping out these protected bike lanes against the will of Toronto city council is a colossal waste of $48 million. The province’s own experts know it will not ease traffic congestion, it will put people’s lives at risk…” One of the stupidest things I’ve ever seen any politician do to any city.

Carney's first-ever project designated as being in the “national interest" is...a crude oil pipeline. That means the oil pipeline can bulldoze past environmental laws, impact assessments, and Indigenous consultation. It can also kill all of Vancouver's orcas. Here's what you need to know:

"The writer in this article appeared to suggest that under Jewish law, [Avi] Lewis would be considered either a 'mosar' or a 'rodef' - both terms to describe traitors. The killer of former Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin used the same language to justify Rabin's assassination..."

We are disgusted and disturbed to see a piece run in the National Post that appears to potentially endorse violence against NDP Leader Avi Lewis for his argument that we all bear a collective responsibility to stop the genocide in Palestine. See our joint response:

Joan Baxter reposted

The term "national interest" has no official definition in Canadian law. In practice, it means whatever the hell Mark Carney wants it to mean. It's the umbrella term under which the interests of capital are dishonestly branded in order to ram them down the throats of countless victims. 1/

There should be a channel that’s devoted 24/7 to the climate crisis. Humans have forsaken their communion with nature primarily due to the proliferation of fake news, and the focus of MSM that we’re all subjected to “Don’t look up”

The new program is excellent, but it is too short. Which is my point. The climate crisis merits at least one hour of dedicated and broad-reaching coverage every week on Canada’s public broadcaster. It went from an hour slot to a half hour slot last week. Maybe you’re happy with that. I’m not.

This post is unavailable.

Odd that “West of Centre” ran until 11:35, then. And the real point / issue here is that What On Earth deserves an hour as it had before, and the climate crisis also deserves daily reports, which is what business gets on CBC Radio One.

This post is unavailable.

So this week, CBC’s “What On Earth” didn’t start until 11:35am, meaning it is not even a half hour now. Just 25 minutes. And again, ironically, it was about broadcasters being told not to talk too much about climate and the crisis we are facing.

Joan Baxter@joanbaxter.bsky.social

This week’s half hour “What On Earth” show is about why climate seems to have dropped off the list of Canadians’ priority concerns. Lots of possible explanations, except for the elephant in the room: media’s failure to cover the fossil fuel-burning-caused climate crisis adequately or often enough.
