So in a huge surprise to absolutely no one, it turns out that NIH director Jay Bhattacharya's new journal based on the premise of letting his friends and only his friends publish essentially whatever they want is full of crackpot nonsense from retired cranks.

publichealth.realclearjournals.orgAre air quality‒health effect claims a statistical analysis fluke? There are literally thousands of epidemiology (observational) studies in the literature claiming that air quality causes adverse health effects, including mortality. There are three profound examples ...

In the 1980s, I spent a summer driving a cab in a small Canadian city with one gay nightclub. A number of regular fares were gay men who cabbed it because there was a non-trivial chance they could be beaten to death outside the club

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

Flu, covid, RSV and shingles vaccines may do more than keep you from getting sick. They may protect your HEART. Flu infection was tied to a sixfold jump in heart attack hospitalizations the week after

Breaking Bad in France: you get a sick leave, you get treated in the National Health Care System. You get well. You get back to work. The End.

“Deaths of despair” is crappy framing that makes it sound like America needs more Jesus. These are really “deaths of poverty.” When you bust unions, freeze the minimum wage, smash the social safety net, and increase income inequality, don’t be surprised when life expectancy drops.

I see we're having a debate about whether it's okay to go back to "X," the site owned by a trillionaire fascist who is currently bankrolling the GOP's midterm, throttled Ukraine's war effort, and still winkingly allows vast amounts of CSAM on his service Answer: No, what the fuck is wrong with you

Blue Henry (Der Blauer Heinrich), a portable spittoon for tuberculosis patients, circa 1900. The patient would pop open the lid and cough directly into the funnel inside (as opposed to, say, coughing into a friend's face or spitting on the floor). The bottom unscrews for easy drainage.

Dumbass Northern flicker (possibly drunk on nearby crabapples) crashed through my window screen and got stuck between the screen and the window. Even after I enlarged the opening, it still took him a while to get out (he’s fine now btw).

Musk advocating for Quebec separatism then following it up by saying Alberta & Saskatchewan should leave too gives away this is just about dissolving Canada for being lib, but I'm glad he's too dumb to realize it undermines separatists' chances by further associating them with right-wing Americanism

Le Québec devrait devenir indépendant et se séparer du Canada, selon Elon Musk. Dans une publication sur X, le patron de Tesla et de SpaceX a aussi dit que l’Alberta et la Saskatchewan devraient faire de même.

The annual curve of flu cases is starting to rise sharply in the US. This would be a great week to get vaccinated, if you haven't already

Anyone who saw the massive success of oleaginous 80s fraudsters like Jimmy Swaggart and Jim and Tammy Faye wasn't surprised by the rise of DJT

Jim Bakker, along with his first wife Tammy Faye built an evangelical empire around the hugely successful "The PTL Club" TV show, only to lose it all over a sex scandal and financial crimes. n.pr/3VsAFUV

Plague epidemics were a regular thing in Europe for four centuries, but they haven't been since 1722. That's because most of us don't live in close proximity to rats, fleas, and lice anymore. Comparisons to Wuhan and COVID are grossly overblown.

⚡️Plague death triggers quarantine, mask mandates in Russia's Irkutsk region in Siberia. The measures come after Darya Shipilova, a lab technician at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute in Shelekhov, died after reportedly contracting plague on Oct. 2.

Insanely dumb, even by Ron DeSantis standards. This will drive out the tourists that are the engine of Florida’s economy *and* defund schools, MAGA police departments, and mosquito control in a state with a raging dengue fever outbreak

Typhoid comes from Greek "typhos," meaning smoke or haze, because of the prolonged fever and delirium it caused in the pre-antibiotic era. "Typhos" also mutated into Latin "stupha" and old French "estuve" (steam bath), and English "stew," which meant bath, then cauldron, then the meal cooked in it.

"Stew" was also Elizabethan slang for "brothel," which may refer to the sweating tub treatment for syphilis. This combined exposure to fumes of cinnabar, or mercuric sulfide (bad, useless) and exposure to extreme heat (actually therapeutic! Treponema pallidum lacks heat shock proteins).

The Pennsylvania Department of Health just confirmed a 5th measles-related death. This really suggests that the outbreak is a lot bigger than the official numbers. The average case fatality rate for measles is about 1 to 3 deaths per 1,000 reported cases in developed countries.
