Kavanaugh stops in action: ICE tackled a non-verbal kid near his school, left him with injuries requiring surgery, and then left the scene when they realized he wasn't the person they were looking for www.independent.com/2026/10/23/i...
like vance, ramaswamy is a hateful, resentful orc of a human being, and the reason i think this will hurt him politically — where this stuff didn’t hurt trump — is that ramaswamy, like vance, is also profoundly unlikeable. he has no charm or charisma or anything. just a dipshit.
Unearthed footage of Vivek Ramaswamy mocking Amy Acton for being a survivor of childhood abuse:
"She has no vision other than to complain about what someone else did to her"
Just been such a revolution in my worldview to realise that people like Musk actually believe this, this isn't just the nonsense they feed the rubes so they can do coldly rational mercantile calculations in smokey rooms among themselves. No. It's rubes all the way down, they're that stupid.
many centrists are as disdainful of science as MAGA these days. virtually every study on the topic, and there have been many, show that youth programs reduce crime. it's a settled question. this is no different from claiming vaccines are a hoax.
NEW: After a judge overturned his murder convictions due to new scientific evidence, James Carver just wants to live a normal life. But prosecutors are fighting to put him back in prison.

plenty of people would try their hands at interesting little businesses if it they did not need to generate a huge profit at the outset and i think this is something governments should encourage. (and lots of little businesses makes a place more livable!)
“AI will kill us all” is how the tech industry, especially rich people in it, avoid talking about real world problems—ones they’re causing, exacerbating, or neglecting—while still thinking themselves good.
“I’m better than all that,” they say. “I got high with my friends and BSed about the future.”
Note on pieces like these, not only is there no suggestion that Republicans should distance themselves from him, there's no hint that there's a reason to. No recap of his CSAM machine. No inflammatory racist quotes. No mention of the DOGE death toll. No history of his fabulist quotes.
This line from Ross Douthat’s final NYT column is something you see all the time from the soft-MAGA right. Sure, Trump’s *most* alarmist critics weren’t correct, but that’s basically true of every president. Trump’s *median* critic did in fact predict his presidency pretty accurately.

The fact that VP JD Vance and Richard Grenell went to Romania—on behalf of the Trump Administration— to advocate for Andrew and Tristan Tate, who by all accounts, were rapists running a coercive sex ring, then permitted them to come to Florida, should be a crazy, crazy scandal.
insecure cosmopolitanism is one of the defining pathologies of our political elite, we are in a ten fucking year crash out from a specific set of urban cosmopolitans very insecure about the fact that they are urban cosmopolitans and I'm so sick of it.
The Platner mess has exposed a very specific sub-tendency on the American socialist left: urbanites whose politics are defined by their hatred of their liberal neighbors, and channel that distaste into a condescending fetishization of rural/working-class male identity
this is just pathetic. besides two MASSIVE leaps in logic ("wanting to tax the rich is the same logic as assassination; it's also antisemitism"), you'd think a *Christian* magazine might engage *Christian* arguments about how to treat the wealthy. they are barely referenced, solely to be ignored
My latest @slate.com on the Roberts' Court's war on the Second Founding. As we learned in case after case this term, in the Roberts Court, even the most foundational guarantees inscribed in the Reconstruction Amendments remain insecure: slate.com/news-and-pol...
i’d say also that his (correct) read is that the democratic center’s refusal to bend on israel is what has opened up space for left insurgents, in large part because “anti american support for israel” now codes as “anti establishment”

"Average American believes in freedom and democracy" factoid actually just statistical error. Average American believes in cheap consumer goods and low wages.
Thaddeus Stevens, who believed in equality of man before his creator, was an outlier, and should not have been counted.
With this ruling, the birthright issue is not going away. The right hasn't really begun *organizing* around getting rid of the citizenship clause. Like Roe, this will be their fight for a generation. And if the Democrats just say "we won" and ignore it, like Roe, the Republicans will eventually win.
Clarence Thomas's concurring opinion in the trans sports ban case in West Virginia contains some of the ugliest transphobic stuff I have ever seen in a legal opinion. Straight-up gleeful. Vile man. www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/25p...
Heartbreaking to hear that Om Malik has passed away. I can hardly believe it. Even just this year, it felt like he was doing some of his best writing. Very thankful for the time he gave us at Micro Camp 2023… I was so excited to talk to him. Rest in peace.
As Kagan observes, the evidence for racial bias in the termination of the TPS program is so explicit and egregious that the majority refuses to cite any of the relevant statements:
Stephen Miller was reportedly the driving force behind the DOJ's recent memo authorizing states to institutionalize people with disabilities rather than fund community-based care
Opinion release days are a big part of the Court's antiperformance-as-performance schtick. They are invested in performing nonchalance about the public's attitude toward them, but in order to do so, they of course need an audience. The secrecy about what exactly is coming guarantees they get one.
One other issue with this practice, besides the hyper-ritualization, is that sometimes the oral summary contains errors or is misleading. They should just tell the public what opinions will be released that day. Or just release them whenever they’re done.
Since I did do my PhD in cyanobacteria growth and treatment optimization modeling AND work in the water treatment industry, I’m gonna share my theory as to what’s happening here and how to fix it.
People are focusing on the painted bottom of the pool increasing residual heat, and while that 1/19
one of the oldest running dialogues in history is "war is a massively complicated political, bureaucratic, and logistical endeavor" vs. "fuck you pussy, war is when you're a fucking badass, oh shit I lost"
Buttigieg: We sit in a in a country that's got the wrong number of people on the Supreme Court, possibly the wrong number of representatives in the House of Representatives. And by the way, when you consider the disenfranchisement of the people of DC, we have the wrong number of states in the US
The 6 Roberts Court justices usually in the majority are many things: GOP loyalists, conservative, libertarian, and pro-religion. What they are not in any way are originalists and they should come clean. www.dorfonlaw.org/2026/06/plea...
roberts and alito have concocted a jurisprudence in which constitutional amendments explicitly ratified to secure the right of black americans to vote now restrain congress from securing the right of black americans to vote.
one thing these exchanges capture perfectly is that the people in charge have absolutely no idea the type of people that top-tier investigative journalists are
Oliver Darcy got the audio of the heated 60 Minutes meeting where Scott Pelley dressed Nick Bilton down!
