Today is courageous human rights campaigner Ahmed Mansoor's 57th birthday. It's the 10th birthday he's spent in a #UAE prison for the 'crime' of peacefully advocating for change in the UAE. I wish Ahmed freedom, happiness and a speedy return to his family. #BirthdayWishes4Ahmed #FreeAhmed

Today is Ahmed Mansoor’s birthday. Since 2017, he has spent his birthday behind bars, where he’s been arbitrarily imprisoned in an isolation cell in the UAE. All charges on which he was convicted were based on his human rights advocacy. Emirati authorities should #FreeAhmed. #BirthdayWishes4Ahmed

The government just approved the Jackdaw gas field. What you need to know: 1. In 2022 it was clear than ANY new oil and gas infrastructure (globally) was NOT compatible with staying below 1.5C 2. In 2026 we are going past 1.5C and into an unknown and very dangerous climate 3. This is NOT 'pragmatic'

Ministers approving new oil and gas licences as the world passes 1.5C are pouring petrol on a burning building. They’re arsonists.

The science is clear: we can’t afford to burn the reserves we *already* have, let alone develop new ones. Existing & approved global oil & gas reserves already far exceed what we can safely burn if we’re to stay below 1.5C. The minister used to say this herself #Jackdaw 🧵3/4

Claims that N sea gas is “much cleaner” than importing LNG are misleading: if you add in the impact of burning the gas, as @carbonbrief.org shows, the difference is marginal. But extracting more from N Sea adds more to total amount of fossil fuels burned globally. It’s reckless & unnecessary 🧵2/4

This would be economically illiterate & environmentally disastrous - and makes us less secure: undermining efforts to reduce energy bills by reducing dependence on gas, increasing vulnerability to global dictators, driving climate emissions & knee capping a market that’s just beginning to take off

We cannot speak about global security and international cooperation without mentioning the climate crisis. If we want to safeguard our children and build a prosperous future for all, the govt must keep dirty fossil fuels in the ground.
