It has been brought to our attention that it is entirely possible Doug Ford does not understand that a podcast called "The War on Cars" might be in favor of things like protected bike lanes.

We recorded an episode today about the bike lane removals in Toronto and decided to text Ontario Premier Doug Ford to give him the opportunity to comment. (Yes, we have his real phone number.) He wrote back.

I lost my father to war - Falklands - so I am fairly cynical about what it was all for. I refuse to wear a poppy, not because I want to forget, but because it has been weaponised by fascists - how ironic is that? On Remembrance Day, I’ll wear this instead. Le Bleuet de France, as yet not hijacked.

Poll reveals that 50% of young Britons would never fight for UK under any circumstances. Cue meltdown on talk radio stations and X. Well at least that's down on the 60% who said the exact same in an Oxford Union debate in 1933. Because... guess what kids... people don't want to fight in wars.

Those of us sensitive to the damage misleading terms can cause would appreciate it if you described these as 'Electric motorbikes' Scott. E-BIkes are as we know legal, safe and an incredible game changer re urban transport. Every one one of your committee's problems comes from Electric motorbikes.

Hoping for expert help... we've spent the past 2h trying to find the MAC address of a device that we want to connect to our wifi network. The network demands its MAC address to allow it but there is no label or any other information for how to find it. Does anyone know how to do it? Urgently needed!

offered a tech job today to a young woman whose reply was: "OMG yes but why would you choose me?" And the fucking answer is because I spent my entire career getting to a point i can do that, without bother, and no-one can stop me. And it is a drug and it is magic. will never say that, obviously.

It would also mean that much of the massive ongoing grid expansion and renewables buildout would be just to feed the new data centres. Grid operators association Netbeheer Nederland is right to ask government for tough choices on how many data centres to allow to be built, and where.

Assuming that they would actually get to build those data centres and get the connections, the new data centres would (at 90% capacity factor) use around 120 TWh/year, as much as all companies and households together use now.

Jon PENNYCOOK reposted

Bizarre: Data centres have a total of 15 GW (15,000 MW) in queue for electricity connections in the Netherlands, grid operators just disclosed. That's roughly the current average national power use!

Three years ago I wrote a piece for The New Yorker about how much the government had come to rely on one man’s companies: the rockets, the satellites, the cars, and, at times, the Ukrainian army’s ability to communicate. Then Musk actually went into government.

Top deck of a bus in York, fella wearing double denim got on, pulled a supermarket trifle out of his bag then started eating it using a Twix as a spoon.

It’s always fun when you see someone eating something slightly unusual to be seen eating in public. Hats off to the lady eating a large bag of rocket leaves, on the tube, like you might a packet of crisps.

Looking at the floorplan that staircase makes sense as a bold architectural statement that creates a dramatic reception/dining entrance, now to take a big gulp of my coffee and check that it's a beautiful modern staircase...

One for the ages this. I have so many questions about the design decisions that led to this. My favourite thing is either the galley kitchen that you cannot walk down if someone opens a cupboard, or the staircase slap bang in the middle of sitting room. www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/8...

The Kremlin has spent years trying to replace Ukraine's government. Now Trump suggests replacing Zelenskyy too. But sure, let's analyze Zelenskyy's attitude.

Jon PENNYCOOK reposted

A reminder that Ukraine are the good guys defending themselves and trying to survive. Literally nothing in the current shitstorm is Ukraine or Zelensky’s fault. Anyone dissecting Zelensky’s words/strategy to find faults has either hopelessly lost the forest from the trees or is doing it in bad faith

In my experience, when you do reader surveys and ask people to self report their interests, they self report the interests of the version of themselves they want to be. Then you look at the actual data re: what they read, and they unwittingly tell you their actual interests.

Sam Altman can't even make OpenAI profitable. AI is a money incinerator, not a profit generator. And I doubt that asking a podcaster to pay $20 so you can type a single question into an LLM and foward the results is the key to making it profitable. And yet, my inbox... omg my inbox.

Jon PENNYCOOK reposted

You would be shocked at how many random companies are trying to get me to buy their AI services or sell them my voice. It's so that I had to create an inbox filter to deal with it. Are there really this many people with bad business ideas, or are the big AI companies trying to build fake buzz?
