People who are surprised that James Hetfield is not particularly left-leaning are gonna be blown away when they learn about the political history of black metal.

I decided to try Fable in my coding harness for the first time, for an appropriately complex problem, and the first thing it did was accidentally turn my unit test runner into a Node.js fork bomb. That's not clickbait and I wish I was joking.

I spent 10 minutes pkill-ing processes on my laptop in an infinite loop as everything slowed to a crawl before giving up and rebooting. Once it recovered, I asked Fable to diagnose and it said "lol whoops, I put a file glob pattern in the test runner that matched the name of said test runner."

An expert on the internet trying to tell me that my brain's reward system is fucked up. Ma'am, I spent the first 36 years of my life with undiagnosed ADHD and have been extremely online since the late 1900s, my brain's reward system never had a chance.

Listened to Bless the Martyr and Kiss the Child for the first time in years and I'm happy to report it still fucking rips.

It's astounding how often someone would rather vibe code their own OSS project from scratch well before contributing to (or forking!) a more mature solution that already solves the same problem. Like... did you even search the web before you started prompting?

Us Vim old heads played Vim Golf to see who could make an edit with the fewest keystrokes. Let's see who can get different models to solve Project Euler with the fewest tokens.

The Zig project's rationale for their blanket ban on AI-assisted contributions makes a lot of sense to me - for them, time spent reviewing PRs isn't about the code, it's about growing new contributors for the future of the project simonwillison.net/2026/Apr/30/...

Spent several hours over the weekend trying to get local coding models working with Pi on a 5 year old Thinkpad with a 4GB VRAM Nvidia GPU, and all I learned is how quick and easy it is to create an OpenRouter account.

loljk turns out that I picked the wrong llama.cpp package out of the ~25 available on the AUR. switched to a different one and now Qwen3-Coder-30B-A3B-Instruct is running. it's slow, but at least it's not crashing on startup.

When the AI bubble pops and we have to remember how to write code again, at least we'll have a lot of good advice in our now-useless system prompts to remind us how that works.

OSS is used to build the models, and OSS code is consumed to train the models, and OSS is used to consume the models, all of which makes building OSS easier, diluting the value, and often the proposition of high quality, of OSS.

TIL my employer's endpoint security scanning agent is already flagging OpenClaw as possible malware on company laptops. A true infosec nightmare.

Interestingly, Pi, the underlying agent SDK that OpenClaw is built on, is the first one I've played with that has actually clicked for me. It's simple enough that I don't worry about it doing something I can't understand, and thus can't correct.

Not the first time I hear this. Brace yourself for a wave of "agentic burnouts", in particular among ADHD people where the continuous dopamine fix resulting from agents producing stuff leads people to endlessly keep feeding them.

AI users are working longer because, for the first time, our tools can finally keep pace with our imagination. When output is cheap, your greatest leverage isn't how much you build, but the taste to know what is worth building - and the rest required to see the difference.

Hundreds of millions in taxpayer dollars have been spent on body cameras, sold as a revolution in transparency and accountability. Instead, police departments routinely refuse to release footage — even when officers kill. (Published 2023)

I've put a dumb amount of effort into building an immutable desktop setup with a declarative config that didn't require me to learn Nix, but I fear I'm running out of energy to resist.

In retrospect, I should have guessed that accelerationism would dramatically change the way software is built.

I want to see studies that compare multiple implementations of the same software spec: entirely by a coding agent, "hybrid" vibe coded by an experienced dev, and entirely coded by hand.

Instagram's iOS app has decided to play the closing music from Hereditary every time I open it today, so I guess I don't use Instagram any more.
