I agree, but I think it's exactly like Rust in this aspect. The people I see struggle the most with Rust are C/C++ programmers who bring their preconceptions about "low" level languages, not the GC languages people who are more of a blank slate in that regard.

I am hoping the plan is to build a code hosting and review system - I love Gerrit with its patch versioning and stacking, but it's also horrible UX. Plus, it having no GitHub-like service pairs poorly with how difficult it is to self-host.

GerritHub exists, but it's slow and rough around the edges. And it provides no out of the box requirements for large teams like CI integrations or merge queues.

while I know the concrete reason about why I started learning rust and then loved it so much that I thought to myself "maybe I can work as a developer", I still don't know the concrete reason why I started learning jj but I 100% get how you feel about jj and how similar those feelings were to rust

git is huge, I feel it's akin to json in webdev, it's so huge that people don't even bother checking if there's alternatives, they assume its the only thing so even though its rare (at least for me) to find projects which don't use git, when I do find one (like lix.systems which iirc uses gerrit)...

...it instantly increases the barrier to entry, so it's such a relief that jj can have different back ends and gives me enough of a reason to learn it, and I feel it's good enough to standout from the rest

Gerrit is just a code review platform, looking at lix it seems they use git. Gerrit is miles ahead of github's PR system for code reviews though from what I can see (and what people who I trust who use it say). Though the barrier to entry is higher :/

Congrats Steve! Knock down those barriers to jj adoption one at a time! P.s. building a code collaboration is good fun with interesting challenges, I’m sure you’ll enjoy it.

The blog post containing a link to the bsky post containing a link to the blog post is doing my head in... But congrats! As "that guy" at work when it comes to #jj-vcs, I'll sure be following what ERSC is doing in that space.

Excited to see what you’ll be cooking up with @davidbarsky.com and others at ERSC and how it will Work compared to GitHub. I’d easily throw money at it if basic functionality such as “a diff between force pushes” was there. Exciting stuff!

😢 going to miss you, but excited to see all the cool stuff you end up doing around jj-vcs! I went to use git recently and I was surprised how much of it I already purged out of memory haha.

Going to miss you at Oxide Steve! Can't wait to try jjHub, or whatever the name ends up being haha. You're still always welcome to come on Fallthrough and chat technology. We should chat about jj and unpack your blog post a bit more.

Jj is really cool, I need to start using it for git-y stuff. Trying to learn Pijul for personal projects I'm not putting on GitHub, though.
