Hey new followers! 👋 This is my personal account. I sometimes post about: - photography, books, movies - (ex)religion, misinformation/info literacy, political extremism - business, software, community My day job is running a SaaS company in the devtools space. Welcome to Bluesky. 🦋

Did a bunch of work on the NAS last night. Updated media profiles, organized files, etc. Freed up about 5 TB. Also rediscovered my lossless music collection. Maybe it’s time to start collecting again.

The macOS built-in curl, git, pip, python3, perl, ruby, and openssl all read /etc/ssl/cert.pem, which still has the emSign root, but they don't check revocation like Apple's Secure Transport libraries. This is, uh, a problem. git and pip especially. I added a short-term workaround to this page.

🚨 Six WebPKI Intermediate CAs are compromised. This is bigger than Heartbleed, but a client-side issue. Anything that verifies certificates against public roots, like most TLS clients, is/was affected. Details, live test, patched versions and workarounds at emudhra.we-have-a-problem.com Act now.

Abstractions and architecture make code easy to extend and modify. DRY is about domain logic, not lines of code. Agents and humans benefit from code that is designed to be extended and modified and is implemented in as few places as possible.

Gem Coop recently published an update on the Gem Fellowship: gem.coop/updates/8/ We're explicitly trying to fund more projects this year. If you maintain an open-source Ruby project, and could use funding, you should consider applying when applications open on December 1st 2026!

gem.coopgem fellowship 2027Hello! It’s been a while, but we’ve been working on some exciting new stuff. Today, we’re very pleased to announce the 2027 Gem Fellowship. Last year, we sponsored work on eight Ruby OSS projects incl...

Welp... Got laid off from Podia today. Kinda a lot to process for a Thursday. I'll have something more coherent to say eventually. For now, send Ruby/Rails leads. Or dog pictures.... Both are good.

A group of top-tier Rails developers I know and worked with (plus myself) were unfortunately laid off today. Any company would be fortunate to pick them up. If you or anyone you know is hiring, send me a DM 🙏

My kid has started a Letterboxd list called Killer Sweaters for films where the killer wears a great sweater and they've asked me to throw it out to Bluesky for more because "that's the kind of thing those weirdos like to do"

This is just an idea but what if you _don’t_ fund an X-Files unit if you’re trying to hide government secrets

(Previously it just ran locally and worked directly with the file system. Now it's TypeScript in Cloudflare workers and works anywhere.)

Also finished designing a landing page, built an install wizard for @honeybadger.io agent skills, and improved the UX of my lil native/SwiftUI side project. Not a bad Saturday, time to go touch grass. 😅

something I don't like about the current state of tech is how things are actively moving to secret/unwritten rules in an effort to prevent AI from gaming systems. backchannels have always been a thing (both good and bad) but feels like they're becoming the ONLY option

This has also been my experience with SwiftUI. The agents will just grind on those UI tests forever.

Justin Searls@searls.bsky.social

Was burning through both the Codex and Claude $200 plans just triaging SwiftUI issues across my suite of apps. Told it to abort UI testing after at most one fix attempt and token consumption dropped 80%. I have become the impatient manager telling devs to quit testing so much.

Things I still believe about software: - good software takes effort - slower is often better - the hard work is human - it should make people’s lives better

Taking time off this summer was so nice. The industry has changed a lot recently. Too much, too fast, tbh. It was good to step back to gain some perspective.

At the same time, software is changing, and it can change for the better. It’s really up to us. If we can now do even more with less, we should aim higher.

There are plenty of new problems to solve, and I’m excited to dive back in. Trying to make the process of developing software a little better every day.

Haven’t been posting much lately because I’ve been vibe coding a cross-posting app. Preventing me from posting is its #1 feature.

The trees are turning colors and there are gloriously crunchy new apples and there are migrating geese flying through the air. The Earth is beautiful and every one of us are a part of it

Personal data sovereignty is becoming my number one personal computing concern lately, heh. Like I'm still fine using apps/SaaS, but if they lock up my data, they can fuck right off.

The fact that DHH credits Marc Andreessen as the person who personally stepped in to help him during the 37signals no politics at work fiasco explains a lot about David's embrace of psychotic optimism imo.
