My read is the root is less about wanting political control over what research is funded and more that they see no value whatsoever to the nation or themselves in research, and so to them it’s a handout to manage and not an investment in future prosperity

Influenza spreads faster in a crowded barracks or prison. Ebola proliferates when hospital beds run short. A new paper in Biology Letters, led by SFI's Brandon Ogbunu, introduces "structural causal influence," quantifying how social inequality shapes disease spread and whether interventions work.

Remember this? bsky.app/profile/did:... Rigorous visualization of the structure in your high-dimensional data. Fantastic work by @dhdegroot.bsky.social With help of the reviewers of Nat Biotech it is now updated, extended an officially published here: www.nature.com/articles/s41... 1/n

Here it is! Bonsai. Now there is really no more excuse for using t-SNE/UMAP. Bonsai not only makes cool pictures of your data. It actually rigorously preserves its structure. No tunable parameters. Incredible work by @dhdegroot.bsky.social. I'm so excited about this! www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

Happy to have contributed to this work! Awesome how realistic systems biology models based on emerging large-scale immunology databases and single cell organ atlases bring new insights about core biological processes.

Could AI be the key to answering what has stumped doctors & scientists for years? In a new study in Science Magazine Advances, Saket Navlakha and Hannah Meyer borrow concepts from machine learning to address an age-old riddle of immunology. https://www.cshl.edu/does-your-immune-system-learn-like-AI/

New paper 🧵 What if the "landscape" that guides cell differentiation isn't fixed, but is sculpted, in real time, by the very cells moving through it? We call this a 'sandscape' : grains of sand that carve dunes as they move, while the dunes' shape simultaneously steers where the grains go next.
