Peter Watts is some excellent sci-fi. The Rifters trilogy is jarring and excellent. Blindsight is also an excellent exploration of consciousness and intelligence. I need to check this series out!

Somehow I missed this, another installment in Watts' "Sunflower" cycle about a jumpgate building spaceship with a human payload that spends most of its time in cryosleep, emerging only at flashpoints where the ship AI throws its (proverbial) hands up in confusion. www.rifters.com/Eriophora-Ro...

Atari is ending support for its 2021 VCS console. The company promises to keep it working by releasing an OS update that removes any reliance on a server, as well as a Homebrew App which lets players continue making and installing games. www.videogameschronicle.com/news/atari-i...

You think we'd launch a new game without a giveaway to go with it?! You know us better than that. So does ASUS because they're letting us give away a *brand new laptop* to celebrate the launch of Tenebris Somnia! RT + Follow + Enter to win a ROG Zephyrus G14 NOW 👇

That CA number being just '4' is pretty funny (and scary), but this PHP vulnerability is bonkers bad. I'm shutting my webserver down until the patch drops. It's not that important to me right now...

This is one of my favorite sequences in animation, period. So hauntingly sublime.

The Spaceshipper 🚀@thespaceshipper.com

One of my favorite sci-fi shows of the decade—of the century!—is celebrating its third anniversary today. Scavengers Reign was a shooting star🌠, poorly supported by HBO Max and then Netflix (as it was only available in a handful of countries), but I'm so glad this one season exists.

I'm making some fried eggs for breakfast. My sleep-addled brain thought "yeah you can totally flip this over using just the pan." Somehow I managed to flip the yolk out of one of the eggs and onto the stovetop. 🤦🏻‍♂️

It finally got cold here and we turned on our furnace but it kept cutting out super early. Furnace tech came today and found a spider living in an important tube. Furnace is now fine. Stupid problem, but at least it was a free fix. And seasonally appropriate! 🕷️🕸️

Basically every time a server room shows up in a movie/TV show it has this whirring and chirping noise that "sounds computery". Not to me. To me it is *exactly* the sound of the stepper motor hard drive in the IBM 286 I had growing up 30 years ago. I love it, but it takes me out of it every time.

I'm generally trying not to post too much political stuff because the world is bad enough and my voice is minimal/I'm preaching to the choir. I fear that this article is correct. Anyone expecting a huge Dem win should temper their expectations. Don't get complacent: www.reuters.com/world/us/six...

To put this in perspective chestnut trees used to be dominant species in the United States. Billions of trees were killed by fungal blight and now fully grown America chestnuts are functionally extinct. There is no getting them back. Ever. MELT, a lost 1997 PC game featuring Iron Maiden's Eddie, has been recovered! We're releasing a build for the first time, along with source code and an updated version for modern PCs. We also speak to developer Paul Tebbutt. Thanks to Tamaracade for their earlier research.

I discovered Retronauts early on, in 2007. I couldn't believe that other people liked old games as much as I did! It was instantly enthralling. I couldn't wait for each new episode (which I listened to on a PSP!). It's still one of my very favorite podcasts. Happy 20th Retronauts!
