Sharing my LinkedIn post here too. Political science lost a great researcher and I lost a wonderful friend and one of the people that brought me to where I am now. Rest easy, Philipp 🕊️🤍

Since I first set foot into academia as a student research assistant, Philipp was there. Encouraging, supporting, sharing his brilliant thoughts alongside the funniest memes. He was one of the most genuinely kindhearted people I know, passionate about democracy, enthusiastic in all of his projects.

Devastating news.... Philipp was one of the first persons I met at a conference as PhD student (he shared so many advices with me about how this conferencing and PhD'ing works) and we shared the enthusiasm about Central and Eastern European Politics.

How do school visits by politicians effect students' attitudes towards politicians and democracy? 🏫 A recent pre-post survey finds significant improvements in their image of politicians, internal/external efficacy, as well as knowledge and interest. 📈 Read the study recap:

I'm very happy to share that my first dissertation paper is now online in Party Politics (🔓)! I examine how political appointments (patronage) relate to coalition support in multiparty presidential systems, using roll-call data from Brazil's Chamber of Deputies (2003-2018). doi.org/10.1177/1354...

Excited to share our new paper in @thejop.bsky.social with @krausewe.bsky.social! Parties polling just below an electoral threshold are far less likely to clear it: a self-fulfilling prophecy that diminishes when polls communicate uncertainty. 🗳️📊 www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/10.1086/...

New paper out in the @thejop.bsky.social (w/ @christinagahn.bsky.social) Do opinion polls shape election results? Using both cross-national data and a survey experiment, the answer we find is yes - though it depends on how we communicate polling results. www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/10.1086/...

The tl;dr: School visits by politicians improved German students’ views of politicians and boosted their confidence in understanding and engaging with politics. Surveys before and after the programme showed small to medium positive effects across diverse student groups.

I’d especially like to encourage women to apply. We’re a fantastic department with excellent scholars, in beautiful Vienna. Data shows that women are less likely to apply for positions than equally qualified men (Muriel Niederle & Lise Vesterlund 2011), so if you’re considering it, please go for it!

Just political science things: Trying to write an opening paragraph for a paper that says "authoritarian populism is on the rise and this can be very harmful for democracy" in a way that it hasn't already been phrased in one of the other gazillion opening paragraphs on this topic 🥲

This is a small UK-focused extension of my main PhD question: what happens to citizens’ attitudes about democracy when they have contact with politicians? In the UK, this seems to be a relatively rare phenomenon with only 50% even having seen a politician in person.

It does not necessarily mean you have lower anti-elite attitudes unless you have a politician in your close circle. But it does seem to be correlated with higher efficacy! Please read the article for the full story ☝🏻

Since I have made this post I have gathered a bunch of observational studies with null results since then. Here is a quick thread:

What are some good examples of political science papers using observational data published with null results?

Btw it never made it. I’m trying to channel my inner Downs and telling myself my vote doesn’t matter anyway. Not sure it’s working very well

You are up to date.
