Social desirability bias is smaller than most people assume. In Blair, Coppock and Moor's (2020) metanalysis found clear effects only for (1) Support for auth regimes (in autocracies) and (2) vote buying. www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

Lot of fear of people lying to polls. We don't have much evidence for it & don't need it to explain error. People uncomfortable sharing their choice are more likely to be in the now ~98% of people who don't respond than to take ~20 min survey to lie. Non-response much bigger deal

This is a paradox in large sci-fi productions. Sci-fi can create worlds which are strange and challenging for the audience. Ursula Le Guin does this amazingly well. But this is at odds with wide-audience appeal, so few big-budget productions really do that.

Like, in Avatar 2 (2022) the entire premise is based on the importance of a nuclear family structure. It is unclear why an alien planet filled with blue people with a tribal structure would have the same conception of "family" as like a Dad from Arkansas in 2022.

How should we measure democracy in an increasingly contested political environment? I'm putting together a panel on democracy measurement for the #DVPW Annual Conference 2027 in Leipzig. It's an "open panel" and open for submissions: www.dvpw.de/dvpw2027/en/... (search for "Panel 993")!

Made a very basic experiment with ChatGPT promting it to act as a critical reviewer for 25 bogus DID-papers. It thought 100% were brilliant and should get an RNR. Repeated it 50 times, similar outcomes every single time.

Interesting. Of course, humans judge sample was only N=3, and they only read the reviews, not the paper itself. But I have the suspicious that the pattern will hold even with larger tests. The problem is how AI would be able to judge a truly novel idea, though the same is true for humans.

By every measure, Opus 4.8 beats human experts as peer reviewers in a study of 124 Harvard social science papers covering a range from statistical analyses to formal models to qualitative work. As academics, we need to figure out how to adapt the practice of science to AI, and we need to do it fast

(It's odd how reluctant we are in pointing out that politics today is mostly a consequence of what happened in the three decades of fastest technological innovation in human history, as opposed to this or that jump in inflation or growth slump well within the range of historical business cycles.)

Matthew Yglesias @mattyglesias.bsky.social

There is a clear "revealed preference" to do less of basically everything and spend more time home alone going online, but I'm convinced a lot of the anger and misery in contemporary America is downstream of this rather than conventional economic problems. www.slowboring.com/p/americans-...

I don't think it is reasonable to ask for specific model versions in AI disclosures. If you work on a paper for 2 years you will probably use 20+ different models just by using the most recent one. Should we also report what ever Gemini model Google uses for the AI search overview?

It will be fascinating to see how this changes the evaluatory standards in social science. There has been a premium on rigorous causal inference. Claude makes this way easier. Hard to know what the signals of high quality research will be in the future.

It is impressive/terrifying how much Claude has improved its quant skills over the last year. It used to make tons of weird decisions; not accounting properly for time, not accounting for autocorrelation, coming up with nonsensical robustness tests etc. Now most of what it does seems reasonable.

Three years ago I wrote a guide to using ChatGPT for research. I gave the example of this prompt which didn't work at the time: “Using Worldbank data, make me a chart of the GDP growth from 1960 to 2020” Now Claude can do this in like 45 seconds.
