shitposts aside, this one is serious, my loves: if you’re just waking up and you have any service online running PHP 5.4 to latest, you need to take it down RIGHT NOW and don’t put it back online until after it’s patched absolutely catastrophic vulnerability dropped in the middle of the night

Honestly surprised never seen this type of design before

A high percentage of elaborate trolls, when the troll is pretend software that doesn’t really exist but there’s code in a GitHub repository, seem to be written in Rust. Not sure what to make of that.

Wonder if any tech company will make a long-term bet on engineer comprehension. While other costs of agentic coding will reduce as models, harness, and skills improve, those are not designed to impact SWE comprehension. There’s currently no measurement of it or attempt to improve it.

Would probably live under a platform or developer experience team? Something baked into pull requests and pre-commit hooks maybe? Would probably get the best junior engineers to apply.

Directionally, I think this piece by @seldo.com is right. Two years ago I was having this same conversation with a colleague, and things are pointing in this direction even more. Also, no one is going to agree on the name, what skills, or who has them for many years. seldo.com/posts/we-are...

First time seeing unplanned bot to bot connections on something I worked on directly. Both teams built bots assumed other side was going to be human, but because that is not always the case now, certain design decisions break down. Doesn’t have team account, doesn’t have same follow up behaviors.

Update: it’s gone. Someone got a new rock.

Went to a city park in Houston to run and spotted a very large silicified tree fossil placed between two trees on edge of a parking lot like a decorative stone, except there were no other big rocks like it between other trees. Was faced with two possibilities listed below.

There’s whole classes of software with few CVEs (disclosed vulnerabilities), because there are not economic drivers pointing people to look there. With AI dropping cost to find vulns, wonder if it results in expansion of software that get CVEs or whether pace just increases in same places?

⚒️ #geology geo hivemind: I been collecting rock from e. NY and w. MA. things have gotten out of hand and now have ~20 30qt bins of rock from ~130 locations. each sample is labeled to location and i have photos of the bedrocks. I need to cull and downsize. Need some institutions who'd like them.

Article has legal focus, but it’s same pattern as in software and coming soon to other knowledge fields. Cost to crank out things without struggling thru learnings goes radical down, cost to review (at least today) is either same or higher. Result is a new choke point the system wasn’t built for.

Saw fish story legend evolve in real time today. Reality: At end of pier a boy caught large red drum, tried to throw it back but fish died. Surfer saw, paddled out to retrieve then paddled back with fish. Next a series of people along pier saw parts & shouted out different stories. Continued…

First person “At least some one is keeping that fish” Second person “that surfer just stole that guys fish!” Third person, “the surfer just caught a fish!” Fourth person, “I think that surfer caught a fish while surfing”

Glad to have seen this as my nephew has it. The jokes work! More @cpsc.gov humor

🧵 NASA was just showing some of their visualizations that they are using to help with situational awareness on the Orion Spacecraft. The first shows where "Integrity" is and how much is left to go on the flight path. Below, it shows Earth's DSN stations & if they are in the day or at night.

Speaking of Barton Creek, it's looking grim these days, like a lot of streams dependent on the Edwards Aquifer. Just looked to see if there was any water rn at Sculpture Falls, thinking it might be a good, not-too-hot day to go out there. But, "Flow rate: 0." 🤬 One of my faves when it's flowing.

The loud boom heard in Cleveland and the light seen across the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic... it was a meteor! GOES-19's geostationary lightning mapper picked up the brief flash of light.

Updating my resume to more explicitly have “fixing software”.
