AHEM, take 2: Addison has been the ONLY death row inmate here for DECADES a Black man who shot a cop in 2006, was sentenced to death we abolished the death penalty in 2019, Addison alive in prison but the order was written to allow him, the sole exception, to still be eligible for a state murder

Southern New Hampshire DSA@southernnhdsa.bsky.social

In 1939, New Hampshire carried out its last execution. In 2019, we abolished capital punishment. But one exception remains. New Hampshire must not become the first state to execute someone under a repealed capital punishment statute. 🗓️ Monday, October 26th 🕗️ 5:30pm 📍 NH State House, Concord, NH

There is blatant voter suppression happening right now in Brazil: flights cancelled and buses suspended to Northeastern capitals where Lula holds the majority, polling stations changed to thousands of kms away last-minute, voters in London told they need to go to Edinburgh… This is criminal.

Brazil will get more attention either way it goes, but this is truly an incredible victory for the student protesters. We ran this in March 2025, which explained the movement's strengths but seemed overly optimist in the months that followed. 18 months later, they succeeded. Gen Z strikes again.

It’s equally amazing to me to see every day how much the “success” of today’s billionaires depends on the government not exercising its basic functions - stuff like antitrust, enforcing labor and environmental laws - and how little we talk about it in the MSM and alas in academia too.

Just saw Wildwood. One of the most heartbreakingly beautiful movies I’ve seen in years. The story would shine on its own, but in combination with the breathtaking hand animation it is truly a masterpiece.

One of the very first video games, and certainly the first (but not last!) example of a video game designed by a physicist! 🧪 ⚛️ 👾

Physicist William Higinbotham was born #OTD in 1910. During the Manhattan Project he was the Electronics Group leader at Los Alamos. In 1958, while working at Brookhaven Lab, he invented one of the first video games: “Tennis for Two.” It ran on an oscilloscope! 🧪 ⚛️ Image: Brookhaven National Lab

🧪⚒️ An important discussion. Tests of significance involve subjective choices about the thresholds above which you should start to pay attention - and what are appropriate (stringent) choices in the context of pure scientific discovery may leave us underprepared for emerging, high-impact risks.

1/ There’s an instructive debate underway in the open review pages of @egu.eu journal Ocean Science. It’s about whether we can tell if the #AMOC is already on a trajectory towards collapse. What I think it really teaches is how scientists judge evidence, & why that differs from assessing risk. 🧵

It sounds like hyperbole to suggest the current administration WANTS measles to become common again but I can’t think of much they’d be doing differently if they didn’t want that. (I think some of them really are eugenicists who legit prefer disease spread to prevention; others just don’t care)

David Ho@davidho.bsky.social

The CDC denied a request from California, Hawaiʻi, Oregon, and Washington to validate a high-volume measles test, citing “other priorities.” 🤨

Very cool but y stop here? Can we build a platform that supports working replicas of Wikipedia that th people of each citi can use to build its own unique wiki for each city? Plus they r indexed both functionally and alphabetically like old yellow pages phone books?

I know we went over this before, but I'm asking again: these 24 hours in a day, can we do something about that? And I know something was done about it before, because it used to be shorter. I'd rather not wait for 100 Myr just to get one extra hour.
