A growing thread tracking my interest and the posts of @eliothiggins.bsky.social re #disordereddiscourse (if that be the hashtag) Feel free to suggest additions, riffs on Eliot's core thesis etc. :) - Seemingly the initial exposition / thread: bsky.app/profile/elio... /1

Eliot Higgins@eliothiggins.bsky.social

What we’re witnessing in America is what happens when disordered discourse captures a political party, then the state itself. The Republican Party was the first to fall - abandoning truth for conspiracy, ideology for grievance, and policy for performative outrage.

Free weekend out. The big story is that Donald Trump is now free to be what he always was--strong supporter of Vladimir Putin and an agent pushing for Russian victory. He no longer has to pretend he cares at all about Ukrainian dead or Russian War crimes. phillipspobrien.substack.com/p/weekend-up...

"Canada yanks sponsorship of disinformation conference discussing U.S. as a threat." www.cbc.ca/news/politic... This is disappointing but not surprising b/c the leash is only so long.

The rush to speculate that asylum seekers are responsible for every crime in the news is a sort of opportunistic informational terrorism. Until it’s disproved it stokes fear and hatred. When it is disproved there are no adverse consequences and they know that they only have to be lucky once.

What a fantastic (and much needed) module to provide MA students with a deep (and ultimately optimistic) scholarly approach for navigating our present technolandscape.

Very excited to be working with the amazing @thecentriclab.com on MSc module - Emotions, Technology & Power. I’ve been a longtime fan of Centric and their radical approach to justice-oriented science. Getting to design a course with them is a dream come true. Students taking this module are lucky! 🧵

The aim: To explore what it feels like to live in a world dominated by science and technology and to imagine how knowledge can be used as a tool for justice, kinship, and care for the land.

Satirical clip from a top Denver investigative journalist. Great classroom case study for how journalistic framing and production choices (music, tempo, vocal tone) can influence audience interpretation of underlying data.

This is a fun article. I find it's been turned into a human-read version (ok, The Economist has had human-audio for subscribers for some time). However, in a age of bots, refreshing to listen to (I'm assuming) a real person. Gift link might be limited 🎁 www.economist.com/podcasts/202...

From Tokyo to Toronto, childhood play has become enveloped in well-meaning bubble-wrap (no wonder kids beg for screens). Some European playgrounds, however, are injected with a dose of risk—that is a feature, not a bug

The forces driving populism are not weakening. They are intensifying. Here's what some of Britain's sharpest minds taught me in the debates we've had over the last fortnight - and ten questions I'm still wrestling with. 👇 liambyrne.substack.com/p/normal-is-...

We were at Prince Charles Road, #Lewes, this afternoon to weed the 11 Hornbeams we planted there in 2024 and the 11 Elms we planted in 2023. One of the Hornbeam #trees had coral spot so we cut it right back - if it doesn't recover we will replace it in November.

An affirming article, recognising the importance of community and solidarity. I recognise that Ark, those Torah scrolls! 😊
