He/Him. I'm Kabanaw. I make music stuff in a big video game you've probably heard of. I don't really stream much anymore but pretty often guest on Pit Crew stuff!

I mean. At the end of the day, the answer is "every single free dollar in the US economy is currently tied up in the AI bubble"

Why isn’t anyone funding video games anymore? aftermath.site/you-are-error-...

Also, despite line go up, we are in a recession, and that's going to put a big damper on especially AAA games. People are going to retreat to free-to-play, backlogs, indie games on sale, and now decomps.

You can describe the disrespect to labor, specifically in tech, specifically in games, in any amount of depth, but at the end of the day. Goose Was Not Valued

Spookum's Week starts in a scant 108 hours. In 4 and a half days. I have a ton of things prepared and ready to go. It's my favorite time of the year and some of the best stuff I do all year. Minimum of 80 hours for the last week of October. Be there for a great time! docs.google.com/spreadsheets...

Called shot: the teacher in the gleeboot is going to be black so that it won't be problematic when he raps

One annoying thing about this is the way that it's treated as a purely moral/ethical stance and not a matter of taste. I have very little interest in games that use AI not just because of the ethics, but simply because I am much less interested in creative works that used it!

Aura/Moom@moomanibe.bsky.social

I'll be honest, there is nothing more demoralizing to me than devs saying "I know AI is built on theft, and anti-labour, and harms the environment, but I'm going to use it anyway bc I don't believe individual choices matter". This is how a movement fails. www.molleindustria.org/blog/future-...

I do not care if the tech stack you rely on has been filled with asbestos, I care if you personally have claude running while you work on your game. Not just because I think you're using a fascist tool, but because your work will suffer for it.

I wonder if the prevalence of things like 1 day amazon boycotts has just convinced everybody that consumer action isn't possible. It is! Be loud! Be judgy! Make it feel shameful to use AI! To watch harry potter! To play xbox games! The capitalists and fascists of the world thrive on complacency!

A lot of people have noted "money" but I also want to point out that a couple of games hubs are where the schools were. Albany and Boston still have a decent number of studios because that's where the software engineers graduated

Aftermath@aftermath.site

Why aren't there any major video game studios in NYC? aftermath.site/aftermath-hour...

The answer to why there are offices for wb games, epic, Blizzard, and cd projekt red in Boston effectively boils down to "MIT was shitting out software developers in the 90s"

I forgot we also have a rockstar in Andover. That's only there because the founder is from there, but it only flourished because all the comp sci graduates were then veteran game developers in the Boston area

Every time I see scrib doon it makes me think of that musical TV show, schmigadoon. That's all

Final morning of solo parenting, the child has decided she wanted to wake up at 5 am. Tried getting her back to sleep but it seems like it'll just be a half hour of quiet rest, back to it

I'm a firm believer that the process is the point, even if all you care about is the output. Working through problems is how we develop new solutions. Sleeping on something is insanely important. Using tools to do it for you in a fraction of the time leads to stagnation. This is a real bummer

I think one of the most frustrating aspects of "but actually AI is actual useful for things now" is how quickly some people will abandon principled stances against something when there's something in it for them

I can recognize the things that AI is useful for when it comes to programming, I'm still touching that shit as little as possible until the technology isn't one of the least ethical inventions of the 21st century

One point brought up in this that I don't quite understand is how more compute == more income. Is there currently a bottleneck for consumers? I don't think I've ever seen someone complain that claude is currently backed up and can't fill their request

Ed Zitron@edzitron.com

Today's newsletter is about how the AI bubble is inflated on the basis of made-up numbers that don't tell us anything, but serve to distract from the the fact that we have no actual information about the industry's financials. www.wheresyoured.at/annualized-e...

Like, the only way that adding more capacity _directly_ improves their bottom line is if it gets more people to subscribe or more tokens spent, and I just haven't ever heard complaints that people can't spend enough tokens

There is such a massive gulf between what AI can do as a code assistant and what it can do as a code generator and I think how positively you think of its abilities is how much you conflate them. Either that or I don't think your ability to evaluate code is terribly good

I think this is an extremely widespread example of the whole "AI seems terrible in my domain of expertise but it seems really good in others" phenomenon

It's all kind of a moot point anyways none of this shit will be affordable when the debtors come a knockin

There is such a massive gulf between what AI can do as a code assistant and what it can do as a code generator and I think how positively you think of its abilities is how much you conflate them. Either that or I don't think your ability to evaluate code is terribly good

Every time I've personally looked at code generated by an LLM with a focused scope on fixing a specific issue it's been pretty on point. Every time it's trying to create or add on to a feature it's mediocre to laughable spaghetti. They cannot replace human programming for anything remotely new.

My daughter has been interested in using my water bottle lately and it's very cute and hold on why are my tonsils swollen

AI shit is so bad for my anxiety. On the one hand, you have lots of studies showing little to no productivity gains, but those are often somewhat out of date, and it has gotten _less_ shitty. On the other hand, people will report crazy gains using it but AI has always left people feeling like that

My belief that at the end of the day you're not going to benefit from using AI to write code is unchanged but it feels like I'm constantly being gaslit and it sucks

Okay I have cured my malaise by looking at fully AI generated code and this shit is mid lmao it looks like someone barely out of college wrote it

I think, if I’m being honest with myself, this is the main reason I refuse to touch these things. More so than being environmentally dilligent, even more so than wanting to avoid being a thief. I am very good at my job. I enjoy being very good at my job. I do not want to become less good at my job

I've seen a lot of programmers really disrespect themselves thinking that genAI is "fine" when it comes to coding or w/e because it's not "art" Programming is an art. It requires creativity. And you're literally programming graphics, it's visual art. It's just art. It counts. AI coding is AI "art"

Kabanaw reposted

one thing you learn from making a lot of things is that the nitty gritty details, the millions of tiny invisible decisions, ARE the art. The "higher level ideas" are not nearly as important or interesting

Freya Holmér@freya.bsky.social

"AI lets you focus on the higher level ideas!!" because we all grew up dreaming of becoming managers and CEOs we all know the real artists at the very highest level are the shareholders, famously full of amazing ideas

Remember when King Neptune AI slopped his hundreds of awful burgers in seconds and SpongeBob painstakingly made one delicious burger by hand

We're thinking that our kid's first word is "bubble" because she's been very into bubbles lately and keeps asking for us to open the bubble bottles (and blow them, I guess). Coming in close second is "boooo" because I was booing the cowboys during the ravens game and she joined in

Being from Massachusetts means being a hater and I'm glad she's leaning into her heritage early

What are the odds that you could go back into this dude's post history and find something from "2-3 generations ago" saying almost the exact same thing

Well that was a fun night of deadlock, I stayed up too late, back to just watching deadlock

A nice bonus about the metered out release of Steel Ball Run is that I get regular reminders that my gender is Johnny Joestar

I jumped ship this year from the patriots to the ravens and I'm feeling pretty good about that tonight

Wow, they're actually going to do this after the final update got a bigger pop than they thought, maybe there's hope for the future after all

I was hoping an announcement like this would also include "we're keeping a small team on d2 to get vaulted content back into the game" because without that, I just don't see how you make destiny's world at all approachable

Also Bungie, you'd better hire back any staff that still trusts you, I want this chill period of unvaulting to be a chance for the stellar game devs you laid off to make something new and wonderful
