there are a lot of philosophical concepts that get egregiously misused out of the seminar room (and in the seminar room, to be fair). but in terms of sheer pernicious misuse "social construct" has gotta be top 5 somewhere and it's not number 5

Channel 4 has announced documentary “The Great ADHD Myth?” It “seeks to determine whether ADHD is a genuine neurodevelopmental disorder, or a social construct.”

Also I want it to not punish me if I buy a generic replacement filter instead of their expensive one. TBH I don’t want a single household appliance other than my phone and computer that talk directly to the internet. I can no longer avoid a smart tv I guess,

I don't want a "Smart Fridge" that orders milk for me. I want a fridge that lasts 25 years and doesn't have a privacy policy that allows it to share my late-night snacking habits with my health insurance provider.

I hate when I wake up in the middle of the night and can’t go back to sleep so I pick up my phone and do the new Wordle and Connections. Then go back to sleep and forget it did it. Then 18 hours later at 930 pm I think, ooh almost forgot about Wordle and Connections today! So disappointing.

Off to check if there’s a duress password app for iPhone lol.

I don’t ever again want to hear about Republicans being the party of fiscal responsibility. They never have been and this administrations expensive wild stabs with programs done without cooperation with Congress or any subject expertise is ridiculous.

Just another way for Hegseth to get the all white all male military of his dreams. Yes this is totally racist and shitty.

When guys are like “that’s not rape, all my friends have done that,” that’s exactly what we’re talking about. That’s the problem. Rape is so common and unpunished that a guy could casually reveal all his friends are rapists and not see it as a problem.

He literally spent years training upcoming Republican candidates that Democrats were not colleagues across the aisle but deadly enemies and to always treat them as such. Some podcast had this anecdote about the coaching cassette tapes he sent out weekly to “trainees” and it really hit hard.

Schnorkles O'Bork@schnorkles.bsky.social

It's a thing how you can basically sum all the modern dysfunction of government and put it all at Gingrichs feet. There was dysfunction before, don't get me wrong. But every solution to every problem he implemented broke something

Because the Democrats spent literal decades since the early 90s treating the Republicans like it was still the 1980s and letting them get such a long running start on their programs of destruction.

David Brooks has absolutely nothing useful to say to Democrats. Or anyone for that matter. In fact, the best policy would be to listen to anything David Brooks says you should do, and then do the opposite.

The Atlantic@theatlantic.com

Democrats became great by fighting the far left—and today’s party can learn crucial lessons from those battles, David Brooks argues:

Honestly, I’m glad/relieved the US team lost to Belgium. I’m already ashamed of how blatantly Trump intervened to cheat and that the team accepted it. To have been able to stay In the tournament because of the cheating would be so much worse. Of course Trump has to mess up the one bright spot.

I was in Ireland with my family. It was a couple of months after the Irish people had voted yes in a referendum to legalize same sex marriage and they were so proud of that. As they should be, I think it’s still the only country that legalized marriage by popular vote.

Anyway we got married in the summer of 2005 on the 20th anniversary of our first date and just did it with friends and chosen family in a very short informal ceremony and didn’t tell any relatives til it was done because I just didn’t want the drama or a big fuss.

It was very us, and it was perfect and I’m so glad we got to get married. I really hope they leave Obergefell alone, but I’m not optimistic.

It was better but never comfortable for him or us and I’m sad about that because he and my mom both missed out. Cuz Jan is fabulous and we are awesome.

Last week was the seventh Father’s Day without him and I was feeling melancholy about that. But when I think about how fraught things could be between us, I do have to admit I’m kind of relieved not to have to navigate that anymore.

But then everyone else in the extended family accepted Jan and were very comfortable with her, and several of the siblings made it clear that they were including Jan (along with the partners of queer folks in the other families) and the whole fear of being judged and criticized turned into concern

That they would think he was a jerk for not being okay with it. I honestly think that’s why he came around to the extent that he did. Also I was more and more comfortable with skipping events if Jan was not included and again, that would have gotten side eye from other family members.

He came to a grudging acceptance of Jan, stopped banning her from the house and then stopped running away when she would walk into a room, and could even be polite and hold small talk conversations.

The thing is, I think he was so freaked out when I first came out because my family is pretty judgmental and always blamed mess ups by kids on the parents, so they assumed that they had messed up somewhere and worse, the rest of the family would be critical of them.

Anyway I was already getting a giggle at how my dad would get uncomfortable when ever any Irish person we were interacting with clocked Jan and I and had to ask “Did ye hear what we did?” And they knew we were expecting to hear the Supreme Court decision any day and kept talking about it as well.

The day it came down, Jan came to tell me about it and we got a bit giddy and teary and then later we were at a pub and all my older (tween and teen) nieces and nephews had heard and came bursting in all excited and asking when we would get married now. While my dad dissociated nearby.

The women have won four World Cups, but absolutely congratulations to the men for making it to the knockout round. Yes, this is a reminder that the USA has, in fact, won a World Cup — four of them. In case you heard otherwise.

What I want to know is, how does a dog who has lived in a house with no doorbell his whole life, has never heard one in person, automatically bark at tv doorbells? One of the mysteries of the universe…

The Mouthy Renegade Writer@mouthyrenegade.bsky.social

Doorbells should be made illegal in commercials. Dog owners know what I'm talking about.
