A thread of MAGA protesting with guns and not getting murdered for it... Arizona, November 2020

The Bulwark@thebulwark.com

Kash Patel: "You cannot bring a firearm loaded with multiple magazines to any sort of protest that you want. It's that simple. You don't have the right to break the law and incite violence."

No one watching can conclude much else than this is the Stephen Miller presidency.

Tom Nichols@radiofreetom.bsky.social

No one can be watching this Davos speech and reach any conclusion but that the President of the United States is mentally disturbed and that something is deeply wrong with him. This is both embarrassing and extremely dangerous.

Trump's #Davos speech rapid response: #Trump’s rambling, 90 minute speech may have sounded somewhat tepid to those expecting fireworks and bombast over Greenland. But all the clues were there that Trump feels deeply driven to acquire what he sees as being rightfully his to take.

It was, quite deliberately, a menacing intimidation tactic dressed up for the refined audience at Davos. For a clear read on Trump’s thinking, see Stephen Miller’s defiant assertion of America’s right to act like a superpower, or Treasury Sec Scott Bessent’s description of Denmark as “irrelevant”.

This is not an administration that is likely to accept a polite but firm “no”. Economic sanction now surely follows and it remains to be seen if NATO leaders follow Mark Carney’s lead in refusing to simply “go along to get along”

Although he seemed to rule out the use of force to take the island, Trump spent much of his speech discussing the US’s military might- helpfully reminding the audience about the unilateral deposing of Venezuela’s leader this month.

I read David Plouffe's essay about what Democrats need to do, and he has a brilliant idea: come up with an economic plan that appeals to people. No mention of the information environment, and how regular voters will hear about and believe these appealing economic policies, but that must not matter.

This- over any other possible strategy- is how Trump upends elections, or even cancels them altogether. He will create the conditions that he then will claim make it too dangerous to hold secure elections. This is the play.

The Donroe Doctrine- not just in international politics but in every aspect of his life is this: say the quiet part out loud and work to normalise it. No cover up or fake agenda needed. Say the outrageous thing loud and convince people of the reasons to be proud of it.

Presidents James Monroe and Theodore Roosevelt helped shape a policy that rationalizes U.S. intervention in Latin America and elsewhere. But Trump has brought that idea to a whole new level. n.pr/49UwohI

Per my last post- this is also true. It's not that the law doesn't matter, it's just that it isn't a sentient being. It is enacted by, adhered to by, ignored by and undermined by people. When those people are doing all of those from with the Oval Office, it's real bad

Asha Rangappa@asharangappa.bsky.social

I know it's frustrating when lawyers point out when something the administration is doing is not legal. But responding with "the law doesn't matter anymore" is really unhelpful and defeatist. Clarifying the law is important because it reminds us not to comply in advance and to resist and take action

This is how he'll attempt to stay in power or throw the midterms. The law is only as strong as the people who uphold it

Adam Keiper@adamkeiper.com

Trump has already declared nine (!) national emergencies purporting to justify hundreds of questionable actions that would typically require congressional approval or lengthy regulatory review. www.thebulwark.com/p/reining-in...

Absolutely correct, except to say that it matters very much what the motivations were and that we document them. Because if we have to live through this information warfare, someday an accurate historical record may help our future selves learn from these moments. A quaint concept these days.

Charlie Kirk was a white supremacist who pushed the racist Great Replacement Theory. Kirk was vociferously anti-LGBTQ. Kirk's final words were to besmirch Black people. Stop this revisionism. People who say bad things don't deserve to be murdered, but they also don't deserve to be praised either.

I call on media to REFUSE the framing pushed by right wing chaos agents like Cernovitch & Rufo on this act of what appears to be political violence. The Democratic former Speaker of the Minnesota House was assasinated along with/her husband. The killers was hunting Dems. www.pbs.org/newshour/pol...

If I have any credibility with you from 20 years of reporting on rightwing & fascist movements, please listen when I beg you not to celebrate Charlie Kirk getting shot. Leave aside morality: this isn’t a match in dry grass, it’s a torch. We do not want what this could ignite & we would not win.

The MSNBC commentator saying that most political violence has historically come from the left just once again showed how we suffer from failing to learn history. Lynching, pogroms, race riots, the political violence that ended Reconstruction, and against the Civil Rights Movement. Come on.

Also, this is what is wrong with the cable news formula. Even when they know nothing, they must fill the air and so they fill it with speculation. We don’t know why this terrible shooting happened. It’s dangerous to speculate motives or politics. Please stop.

100%. And equally inevitable will be the torrent of fake accounts set up on every platform to create content that will "prove" them right.

Marisa Kabas@marisakabas.bsky.social

there was never going to be a world in which the right didn’t claim the left was celebrating the death of charlie kirk, no matter how respectable anyone tried to be.

Political violence is bad. It usually begets more political violence. Celebrating political violence is bad. It usually encourages more political violence, against various targets. Campus shootings are bad. They make everyone on campus less safe. It's bad that what I wrote here is controversial.

The far right has been looking for a reason to commit mass political violence and it’s extremely important to unite around the principle that all political violence in America is unthinkable and unacceptable.

Being able to protect its citizens from extreme heat because of the fomenting of a culture war about climate change, Lyon and other cities are doing the hard work. Climate leadership needs to looks like staying laser focused on taking actions and showing people the results.

Crime has been falling in DC year on year. This is a man in need of a big, showy display of power- and to remind his followers (wavering ever so slightly on the Epstein issue) why the world beyond MAGA is terrifying and only he can save them. All lies. All designed to polarise and divide.
