Very happy to announce the winners of our demoscene competition! 🏆 We had some amazing entries - check out what can be done in just a few square microns of silicon! tinytapeout.com/competitions... Thanks again to our judges and participants! #silicon #demoscene #ASIC

So I found an old Pentium (probably 133) which sparked an idea for a project. Stupid but fun? Doesn't matter! I want to build a breakout board that lets me bring up the CPU with an FPGA. Emulate the Northbridge, interface with some external RAM, implement PCI peripherals.

For the FPGA, I'm thinking of ECP5 or Artix-7 or something like that. But I will need to interface with a ton of pins which can be a bit cumbersome. Need to think a bit about this. Then of course comes the gateware. But I'm thinking I should prioritise geting the "bringup platform" up.

First step is probably to find some Socket-7 sockets, make a proper PCB footprint and document the accurate pinout. This should be very doable. Then design a breakout board. Thinking of using IDE/PATA connectors. Fastest signals are 66 MHz so should be okay. Then pick a good FPGA and interface.

[coffee nerd talk] I feel a bit like a failure - been dialing in a V60 brew with an 1Zpresso Q grinder and Hario filters but it keeps tasting a bit bitter no matter what I do. Gave up, brewed with a Moccamaster with standard Melitta filters and it tastes amazing. Hnggg. Should I try faster filters?

Started working on my Nintendo DS Lite video capture to HDMI project today after weeks of zero motivation. Huzzah! Fun fact, the fastest signals here are about 10 times slower than on the N64 (~5.5 MHz vs ~50 IIRC), which reduces the risk for signal integrity problems.

Got my first capture from the top screen of the Nintendo DS Lite using a Raspberry Pi RP2350 microcontroller. Captured using PIO, outputting DVI-D using HSTX. There is still some work left to do, but it's getting there!

Found the root cause of the blurryness. Turns out that I had connected two of the color bits to pins that were tied to the i2c bus on the carrier board I am using, causing the signals to go all the way to the hdmi capture card and affecting the signal a lot.

[Please share with people outside of cybersec] Do you have a horror story when you had to deal with cybersecurity companies / people? This is your chance to vent! → forms.gle/9aX24HrfnEQm... I'm running an anonymous survey to listen to stories and look into the disconnect we sometimes have.

Glasgow is such a great tool for interacting with hardware. Been using it a lot, and it’s both easy and fun to build custom applets for it.

Catherine@whitequark.org

are you a platform/embedded developer? do you need to interact with hardware in a semi-custom manner? would you like to suffer a lot less doing it? if so, #GlasgowInterfaceExplorer might be for you. the code below is all you need to build a custom testbench:

Open source DisplayPort implementations for FPGAs - what's the state of this in 2025? For me, starting out with a single line, at the lowest speed would still be cool. TX is of course interesting, but RX and protocol analyzers would also be interesting.

It’s not pretty but it worked. I tried out my micro grabbers first but they didn’t feel that great (those tiny ones from aliexpress designed for qfp pins etc). They gripped okay but had shorting potential which isn’t ideal.

Does anyone have recommendations for any high quality discussion groups or communities for defensive security? Security engineering, detection engineering, DFIR, etc? Feels like there's an abundance of offense but not so much other stuff.

I've gone a bit off the deep end and added more columns and functionality. Anyway, here's 49 Pico form-factor compatible boards compared in a table. PRs welcome. arturo182.github.io/pico-compati...

Is anyone out there maintaining a list of Pi Pico form-factor compatible dev boards?

Intel launched the Pentium processor in 1993. Unfortunately, dividing sometimes gave a slightly wrong answer, the famous FDIV bug. Replacing the faulty chips cost Intel $475 million. I reverse-engineered the circuitry and can explain the bug. 1/9
